The 2024 Paris Olympics has not been without some controversial moments. From Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat being disqualified from the Finals due to being overweight by 100 g to unconfirmed claims being raised about boxer Imane Khelif, such instances have generated the attention of the world. Now, Team USA has also gotten itself in the news after gymnast Jordan Chiles was asked to return her bronze medal. Messages of support are coming in for the 23-year-old in light of this controversy, including some from the NBA world.
Having recently secured his third Olympic gold medal by defeating France, LeBron James sympathized with Chiles. Taking to his official X account, the 39-year-old retweeted a post by Team USA, which paid tribute to the gymnast through the caption “Forever THAT girl (heart emoji).” LeBron reiterated that message and added his own reaction by adding an infinity, a heart, and a US flag emoji in the caption.

The alleged controversy began when Jordan Chiles was reported to have scored 13.666. This was slightly lower than the 13.7 that Romanian gymnast Barbosu had secured to her name. However, after an inquiry request was put forward by Chiles’ coach Cecile Landi, her score automatically went up to 13.766, allowing her to take home the bronze.
After an official inquiry by the CAS, it was determined that Cecile Landi’s inquiry request cannot be officially considered, since it was submitted 4 SECONDS after the one-minute limit. For anyone who believes that mere seconds don’t matter, the loss of an Olympic medal by just 4 seconds should serve as an opposing example in the future.
Jordan Chiles herself was distraught over the decision reversal. Taking to her official Instagram account, she simply highlighted a few ‘broken heart’ emojis to state just how heartbroken she was. While she may not get her bronze medal back, she has the support of not only LeBron James, but other basketball enthusiasts.
NBA celebrities and Fans react as Jordan Chiles loses her bronze medal
Gabrielle Union-Wade, prominent Hollywood actress and wife of Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade, was amongst the first people to shared her reaction. It was only less than a day ago when the 51-year-old shared a picture of Jordan Chiles with her bronze medal, and captioning it as “earned it.” Now, in the aftermath of the official decision stripping the gymnast of her accolade, Gabrielle Union retweeted the same post by Team USA that LeBron had highlighted on his X account. Dwyane Wade’s wife had been cheering on the US Gymnastics squad from afar.

While her husband was recruited by NBC to serve as a commentator during the games, the actress would take to social media to hype up Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles and other members of the team. Therefore, having closely been following the games, the heartbreak would not have come easy to her.
Another NBA star to make his voice heard was Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton. Similarly to LeBron James, the 24-year-old highlighted Team USA’s post and used a couple of emojis to put out his reaction. While the NBA player may not be able to resonate with coming so close and yet being denied a medal, he and his Team USA squad almost came close to finding it out.

During the Semi-Finals of the Men’s Basketball tournament, the Serbian team came quite close in eliminating Team USA from the tournament. In fact, by the time the game reached the fourth quarter, Serbia was leading by 76-63. Fortunately, the combined efforts of LeBron James and Stephen Curry pulled the time out of the rut and allowed them to secure the win. If the game was lost, then the US Basketball squad would have to go home without a medal for the first time ever!
One fan made a case for Jordan Chiles by stating that the scenario faced by her would never be seen in a tennis match up or in the NBA Finals. By stating that “Jordan earned it”, the commentor asked for the judges to be held responsible.
This is solely on the judges! Could you imagine a tennis match being overturned for these reasons? Or a NFL/NBA final being stripped bc of the refs bad calls? The judges under no means had to accept the appeal OR change the score BUT THEY DID!!! Jordan earned it! #JordanChiles https://t.co/TQ6o59d7NU

Believe it or not, but referees often get blamed for the outcome of a game even in basketball. As referenced above, Team USA had a very narrow win against Serbia. With the matchup taking a complete 360 degree turn in the final quarter, Serbian player Bogdan Bogdanovic was convinced that the referees were allegedly preferring his rivals. Bogdanovic even referenced the officials’ alleged disdain towards them by stating “We tried to talk to them (referees). They just walked away. But it’s ok. The USA doesn’t need that type of help against us. You know, we didn’t have that type of help when they were grabbing us with two hands and all that.”

Overall, the reactions were supportive towards Jordan Chiles losing her bronze. Looking to keep fighting, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee revealed that it will file its own appeal. The decision was announced via a statement that said “We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed.” Only time will tell whether the gymnast will receive back her accolade or not.
