Jason Kidd is making his rounds on the internet for quite the show after his profanity-laced rant at a reporter. He did not raise his voice, nor did he throw the mic at someone’s head. He answered the question in his usual calm tone. Except this time, it included a few profanities latched here and there. And LeBron James is loving every second of it.

He is quite surprised to see the Mavericks coach curse. According to him, he has never heard or seen the 50-year-old swear.

While James’ surprise might have mirrored many others, it’s quite clear that Kidd was upset. As LeBron confirms, “For J to curse you know he wasn’t happy at all!”. And then comes Bron’s compliments, “He was HOT and quite frankly RIGHT!! Love J Kidd!”

The reporter in question was ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. And Kidd’s response was to the question about Dallas’ clutch performances. The same one that got a lot of backlash last season. As far as Kidd is concerned, the media could do with focusing on “positive stuff” for a change.

What probably triggered him more was the mention of trading for Kyrie Irving came with their worst performances in crunch time. He said, “Maybe it’s the things you guys thought should have happened Day 1, is that they should be successful right off the bat, and it takes time.” He also mentioned how the media had been going on and on about the terrible clutch season they had last year.

But not this time around, because, “s**t’s going good.” So what happened last year?

The Mavs’ clutch woes of last season

To put it in the simplest of ways, the Lone Star State had a bad clutch game in 2022-23. Looking at their stats from last season, the “Big D” led the NBA in clutch with 55 games played. Dallas was 26-29 in those games with a net rating of -1.0 per 100 possessions.

But what really became the thorn in the flesh here was the offense. Having a tough shot-making elite talent like Irving paired with a practically unguardable scorer in Luka should have meant Dallas would breeze through. But that did not happen.

The Mavericks averaged 106.2 points per 100 clutch possessions of offense. This put them in the 22nd best-clutch offense position. As opposed to their regular season offensive rank, the sixth-best offensive rank with 115.9 points per 100 possessions.
