The Atlanta Hawks‘ playoff hopes took a significant blow with news of a fresh injury to a key young player. Currently seeded 10th, 36-44, the Hawks are looking to solidify their position for the play ins and beyond. Owing to the goals, the team sought point guard, Trae Young‘s presence for the crucial phase, following his improved condition after surgery. However, as they head with the favorable news, Hawks stand to take in another obstruction.

A few hours ahead of their clash against the Timberwolves, Marc J Spears revealed the injury report. “Jalen Johnson has a right ankle sprain and will be re-evaluated in approximately three weeks,” the post read. Alongside DeJounte Murray and Bogdan Bogdanović, Johnson, as a versatile point forward has been a vital player for the Hawks in their recent run. Moreover, the 22-year-old forward was a reliable force in Young’s absence but will unfortunately be missing out on the play-in tournament.

Johnson has had a breakout season for the Atlanta Hawks, averaging 16.0 points, 8.7 rebounds,  and 3.6 assists. He also boasts 51.1% FG%, further offering much-needed offensive firepower alongside Dejounte Murray. His ability to space the floor and attack mismatches have made him a valuable asset for the Hawks.

Except for Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu is also ruled out for the season due to an inflammation in the left big toe. He was a key piece of the Hawks’ defense alongside Clint Capela. Okongwu will be re evaluated in 4 weeks. His absence may be less impactful than Johnson’s. For, Johnson’s absence weakens the already weak and injured front court.

Trae Young joins in to carry the load

With the team in a crucial phase, the responsibility shifts to the main players. De’Andre Hunter, who has been averaging 17.6 points per game in the last 5 games, will need to continue his performance. Clint Capela’s presence becomes even more essential for the defense, considering his 45 steals and 1.2 blocks per game.

Except for them, the Hawks will require Young to be in full condition and rhythm. The star point guard, having missed 23 games this season due to a torn ligament in his left little finger, joined the team back on Wednesday with a season average of 26.1 points, and 10.8 assists, alongside an impressive shooting percentage of 58.4.
