The name LeBron James has become synonymous with greatness. Probably one of the most dominating players on the court, Bron has permanently cemented his name in the history of the league through his long and illustrious career. Although his career is laced with a long line of achievements and accolades, even someone as great as LeBron is not immune to disciplinary actions by the NBA.

In his defense, LeBron has had a clean slate for almost all his years in the NBA. However, it all went wrong for him in November 2021 during the Lakers‘ game against the Detroit Pistons. His ruffle with the Pistons’ center, Isaiah Stewart, resulted in a one-game suspension for the King, going down as the first suspension in his career, and hopefully the last.

Bron has had his own share of repercussions from the league in the form of fines for various antics in the past, but this was a first as far as suspension was concerned. LeBron’s altercation with Stewart happened in the third quarter of the match when they were vying for position for a rebound during a free throw. After jostling for a few seconds, Bron’s elbow seems to make contact with Stewart’s face.

Stewart falls to the ground and gets back up with a bloodied face to square off Bron, resulting in a confrontation between the two. Thanks to both their teammates, the situation was diffused without further escalation. Stewart was slapped with two technical fouls and Bron received a flagrant foul penalty 2, after which both of them were ejected out of the game.

Another ‘almost suspension’ for the King

However, both Bron and Stewart were about to find out the further consequences of their actions. Bron was suspended for one game which meant he did not play the Lakers game against the New York Knicks on the 23rd. Stewart, on the other hand, was suspended for two games.

According to the NBA, LeBron was suspended “for recklessly hitting Stewart in the face and initiating an on-court altercation,” while Isaiah was suspended, “for escalating an on-court altercation by repeatedly and aggressively pursuing LeBron“. Both of them were suspended without pay.

Apart from the suspension, LeBron lost $284,000 in salary while Stewart lost about $45,000. LeBron had another close call with a suspension in May of the same year, for the alleged violation of COVID-19 safety protocols by attending a party for his tequila brand. Later, it was found that he posed no threat to anyone and was let go.

Suspension aside, LeBron has lost a significant amount of money to the league over his career. In fact, he has a history of paying disciplinary fines that amount to about $400k so far. At the end of the day, that’s a small price to pay for being great and human because come on, nobody’s perfect.
