In June, Fenway Sports, LeBron James’ $8 billion venture, announced that they would be joining the TGL golf league. As the second of the six teams to be announced, it was set to represent Boston and the New England region. Initially named just TGL Boston, there is now more information about the name, logo, and branding of the team.

TGL has the backing of golf superstars Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. It was formed with the hopes of rivaling the Saudi-backed league. PGA Tour and LIV Golf recently signed a $3 billion merger. We are still unsure where the two stars stand about this development. But for now, the league has partnered with the PGA Tour and will host six different teams consisting of three players from the tour. It is all set to be played from its Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, home venue from January 2024.

Fenway announces team name and logo

Recently, the company announced Boston Common Golf will be the team’s name. They also unveiled the logo, a singular ‘B’ leaning at nine degrees. It is favored by most pros on the face of their drivers.

The branding color is green, well ‘common green’ to be more specific. It is in homage to Boston’s green spaces, its Irish heritage, and the walls of Fenway Sports Group’s namesake. “We’ve created this brand identity carefully with a nod to the timeless legacies of both golf and our city while also embracing a fresh, dynamic approach that supports our purpose to help foster accessibility through this new, modern, and technologically connected team format of the game,” said Boston Common Golf Governor Teddy Werner.

Besides golf, Fenway also has investments in the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC. LeBron, an investor in the Fenway Sports Group is also not the only NBA star to venture into the league. Golden State Warriors players, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson along with Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo all own teams as well.

Golf: the NBA’s favorite pass-time

Since the days of Michael Jordan, the stars of the NBA have always enjoyed the soothing and calming game of golf. Be it for an added competitive edge, friendly wagers, relaxing and unwinding, or participating in Pro-Am tournaments, basketball players have shown a tremendous amount of appreciation for the Gentleman’s Game.

Perhaps the best NBA golfer of all time is Steph Curry, who made the rounds on the internet for his amazing hole-in-one a few months back. Steph, known for his sharpshooting on the hardwood, did not disappoint on the links. He once talked about how the game of golf requires a lot more mental effort than basketball.

With LeBron now a partial owner of a TGL team, will we see the King take to the links as well? Will we see the LeBron-Steph rivalry shift from the hardwood to the course?
