On Saturday, Osceola Magic guard Mac McClung did the unthinkable with his three-peat in the NBA Dunk contest! While McClung has already won the competition twice, his performance on Saturday was one for the ages. More so because of the stiff competition from San Antonio Spurs’ rookie Stephon Castle.
Each of the 26-year-old’s dunks received a perfect 50 score as he got the better of Castle. However, since then, there’s been an unpopular opinion circling the contest’s results. Some think Castle should have won instead of the G League star. Well, this opinion didn’t gain much traction at first, but now, with NBA Hall of Famer and former Spurs star Manu Ginobili giving his take, things are starting to get a bit hot.
The four-time NBA champion posted a tweet expressing what he feels about the results. “I’m probably biased, and I admit that McClung is amazing, but … Steph deserved the win IMHO. You guys agree? Let me know.” Ginobili wrote. He did admit that his San Antonio links might make people think his opinion is biased, but Castle deserved to win in his opinion.

Well, naturally, his asking the people’s opinion sparked a debate among fans. Some think McClung’s dunks were just too good, whereas others share Manu Ginobili’s opinion. One fan tweeted, “Stephon Castle seeing Mac McClung pull out some bullsh*t while he’s doing the most.” A video of Jayson Tatum being annoyed on the bench from an NBA game was attached to it, adding to the humor as more reactions poured in.

In the second round, the competition between McClung and Castle was neck and neck, with the Magic star winning the competition by just 0.4 points! A user gave his verdict, saying, “Both were great, but McClung deserved it.” Well, that’s true, given both players gave it their all, and McClung edged the Spurs’ rookie by a point.

However, not everyone has a neutral opinion. Another fan agreed with Ginobili, suggesting, “Yes! I think they should disallow props and disallow non-NBA players.” That’s a bit harsh as even though McClung doesn’t regularly play in the NBA, he’s still tied with Orlando and has been a big reason people love the Dunk Contest in recent memory.

Orlando fans backed their own, stating, “I don’t even remember one Castle dunk — I remember all 4 Mac dunks.” It is an interesting take, as McClung made great use of the props to make his dunks look even more impressive. That actually might have been a deciding factor while the judges scored his dunks. While another fan believes McClung has found the exact ingredients to win a dunk contest. “He’s found the formula for success. Someone else needs to come in and shake it up. Castle was close.”
Well, that certainly seems to be the case with Mac bagging three straight dunk contests, but props to Castle, who finally gave him a great fight. So, whether he competes again next season remains to be seen. However, he for sure has rejuvenated the competition. Now, Memphis star Ja Morant is thinking of making a comeback! It’s something that gives us fans another reason to look forward to next year’s contest.
