When Grant Williams’ injury news surfaced last month, everyone knew it was bad. The Hornets star was helped off the court in their 125-119 loss to the Bucks. Initial reports confirmed Grant would miss the rest of the season. Prayers poured in for the hurting player with the only exception of Boston, for obvious reasons, and after the latest Jayson Tatum drama! Now another fresh update has dropped regarding the forward, but the community is rather focusing on something else…
According to Shams Charania, the 26-year-old underwent successful surgery: “Charlotte Hornets big man Grant Williams has undergone successful surgery to repair multiple tears in his knee, including the ACL. He is expected to return in 9 to 12 months.”
While the fans were relieved after getting this news, that’s also where the problem started. Many saw the update clearly, and two specific words used to describe Williams caught their eyes. The majority of the hoops community took exception to the nickname “big man” and soon comments started flooding in overlooking the bigger picture of Grant’s well-being.

Shams Charania calling Grant Williams “Big Man” gets all the attention from the fanbase: “Little bit of a stretch…”
Forgetting all about Grant Williams’ season-ending injury, a puzzled fan questioned, “Big man?” The Hornets forward is listed at 6’6″. So, if Shams calls him a “big man,” one can only wonder what he would call the tallest (7’3″) active player, Victor Wembanyama!
Another fan commented, “Charlotte Hornets ‘big man,'” which is factually correct, mind you! While also sharing a clip featuring viral live-streamer IShowSpeed. In the clip, other voices can be heard claiming Speed is laughing at someone’s misery, while he explains, “I’m not laughing… I’m NOT”…

“Big man, isn’t he like 6’6? lol,” read one of the comments. The league is filled with towering athletes, with most of them having much more height than Williams. So, the 26-year-old might not fit the traditional mold of a “big man” which the fans kept pointing out.
Just when things couldn’t get any worse, many more comments highlighted what Shams called Williams. One user wrote, “‘Big man’ is a little bit of a stretch 💀”. Strangely, the focus quickly shifted for most fans to the ESPN insider’s choice of words, rather than showing concern for the Texan, whose chances of showcasing his abilities with his new team are now done, at least for this season.
While a torn ACL would require about 9 months of recovery time, with other torn ligaments, Williams’ recovery time could stretch beyond the given timeline, even spilling into next season.
Someone was kind enough to hope Williams is fine before emphasizing the “big man” part! “Look I hope Grant’s fine but big man??? He’s not even 6’7”!!!” they wrote. So, if Shams had known that using the term would attract so much attention, he likely would have avoided it. But what’s done is done.ADVERTISEMENT

Grant Williams was averaging more than 10 points per game and was rated as one of the top defenders this season before his injury. More importantly, he was the last available Center on the Hornets roster! This is going to be an uphill battle for the ‘big man’ and even for Charlotte.
The above comments don’t mean that fans weren’t concerned about Williams’ health. In fact, when news of his injury initially surfaced, confirming that he wouldn’t be appearing for the rest of the season, netizens sent their warmest wishes and prayers to the Hornets forward. The player then posted a tweet on X, appreciating all the love, “Appreciate all the love and support from those who have reached out. Time to go to work it’s all we can do🤙🏽”. For now, Grant will get a long rest to heal and eventually recover.
