Is Grant Hill just a figurehead for Team USA, or does he actually have real influence?

The Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown’s snub from the Olympics confused the NBA community before the exhibition games. Despite being the Eastern Conference Finals and NBA Finals MVP, the USAB did not call the 27-year-old to serve the nation and participate with the Dream Team 2.0. It escalated exponentially when the team called Derrick White from the Celtics instead of Brown to replace Kawhi Leonard on the team. Consequently, Team USA managing director Grant Hill and Jaylen Brown shared some heated words on social media platforms and in media interviews. The latest developments make it seem like the 51-year-old Hill is ready to move past woes, but his credibility remains in question.

Gil’s Arena host Josiah Johnson shed light on this matter in his podcast, highlighting Grant Hill’s statement to Rachel Nichols [Open Run Show] that read, “I’m confident he and I will sit down at some point and talk about it and get to some level of understanding. Look, he’ll be a candidate if he wants in ’28…”

After Josiah finished telling the story, he inquired with the Gil’s Arena crew about their next steps if they were Jaylen Brown. Former NBA player Rashad McCants, responded, “There’s only two paths for him. He can go with the current, or he can go against it. If he go with it, yeah, I’m going to be part of this. Everything is forgiven under the rug blah blah blah. But if he go against the current, that’s him standing on the business right now.”

Since Jaylen Brown has gone with the second approach, McCants criticized Grant Hill’s approach as he said, “You [Grant] trying to backpedal and backtrack talking about you going to give me an open invitation to come back and do some sh**  that you’d be a candidate just like you were the squad in but then you know like Gil was saying like Grant Hill don’t have no real say about XYZ.”

Well, McCants was right there. If Grant Hill is not eliminating the one factor that Jaylen Brown raises continuously, what is the point of having a conversation then? So, were Hill’s claims just a PR reply to Brown, or did they carry any weight?

Did Grant Hill just pull off a PR move on Jaylen Brown?

Grant Hill has just held out an olive branch to Jaylen Brown, at least publicly. It came after Jaylen Brown responded to Hill’s conspiracy theory accusation with his tweet. “Grant Hill calling me a conspiracy theorist is disappointing. I’ve been a VP since I was 21 years old. I have great understanding.”

For now, it depends on how Jaylen Brown reacts to it, considering his past responses and outspoken nature on the issue.

On the other hand, Grant Hill and USAB have been as diplomatic as possible. Also, Jaylen Brown has been handling the charge of NBPA since 2019 as a vice president, so he was not bluffing as he knows how PR games are played out in the league. Brown might continue to go after it publicly if the USAB takes forward diplomatically.

After all, they have not got in a private meeting yet. And with what Grant Hill has proposed after so much controversy, chances are dim. However, they are still alive and enough to hope for an end to this feud, since Jaylen Brown is not just any other player. What do you all think? Should Jaylen Brown accept Hill’s offer?
