Upon his arrival as the 2023 #1 pick, Victor Wembanyama carried sky-high expectations. While adjusting to the league, he tantalized NBA fans with glimpses of his potential dominance in the coming years. Impressively elevating his game over the initial four months, he also secured spots on various coveted lists. However, a recent instance in practice limited his on-court presence. After a rolled ankle, the San Antonio Spurs implemented minute restrictions on the Rookie of the Year candidate. The move came in light of preventing the possibility of a major setback.
During this precautionary period, Wembanyama’s playing time was curtailed to just 25 minutes per game. Moreover, he was also restricted from participating in back-to-back games. Now, after weeks of careful monitoring, the imposed restrictions are being lifted. Victor Wembanyama is officially cleared to play 30 minutes per game, signaling a positive turn in his recovery and readiness to contribute at an enhanced level.

The minute restrictions have soared over Wemby’s last 14 games. However, despite fewer minutes, he has managed to post better numbers than earlier. He has surpassed expectations by averaging 22.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game during the stretch. Moreover, he has also maintained his league-leading block clinic with 3.3 blocks per game. Can Victor Wembanyama win Rookie of the Year?
The Spurs’ announcement couldn’t have come at a more opportune moment, as they gear up to face the Oklahoma City Thunder next. The Thunder are the top team in the West, with a record of 30-13. On the other hand, the Spurs rank last with an 8-35 record. With that, it is evident that the matchup will present a tough challenge for the squad. However, more significantly, it will showcase the leading contenders for the Rookie of the Year category – Victor Wembanayama and Chet Holmgren.
In the early days of the season, Holmgren had the upper hand over Wemby, boasting a superior stat line with better efficiency and making pivotal plays for his team. However, as the season progressed beyond the midpoint, Wembanyama surged to claim the top spot. He is now posting superior averages in points, assists, rebounds, and blocks – all while spending fewer minutes on the court. Additionally, he has managed to narrow the gap in shooting efficiency, although there’s still work to be done if he aims to surpass Holmgren.
