Stephen Curry's $62.6M extension—Is he worth every penny or is it too much for one player?

For quite some time now, there have been doubts about whether Stephen Curry would sign an extension deal in the upcoming days. The Athletic reporter Anthony Slater recently provided some clarity on it by stating, “any contract conversation isn’t expected to take place in the near future” and that “it’ll be entirely on Curry’s preferred timeline.” Despite more than a month remaining on the deadline, the NBA star seems to have moved his “Preferred Timeline” up!

Earlier today, it was announced by renowned NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski that Stephen Curry has agreed to a one-year extension, that would grant him a whopping $62.6 million over the period. The contract is set to keep the lead scorer within the franchise till the 2026-2027 season. Curry has created history with his extension, as he becomes the first American athlete ever, out of all major sports leagues, to earn $60 million in a single season. On top of that, the Warriors star was already set to be the highest-paid player for the 2025-26 season with an expected pay of $59.6 million. With a $62.6 million contract, no player yet may get the chance to sign a deal and overtake him.

The one-year condition would certainly confuse some people. After all, why wouldn’t the Warriors wish to keep their star player for a longer duration? Well, Curry’s new contract has now allowed him to surpass over $500 million in NBA career earnings. This puts him in the very elite list containing the names of just LeBron James and Kevin Durant. However, by the time the terms of the contract come to an end, the four-time NBA champion will be 38. According to the Over 38 rule highlighted in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) of the league, teams are limited from handing out contracts that last four or more years for athletes of the age of 38 or above. This is the same reason why LeBron James’s three latest contracts only carried a 2-year extension, with the most recent one offering him $101.4 million.

Stephen Curry still has two years remaining on his existing four-year, $215.4 million contract. The extension comes just as the Warriors are looking into the next steps for the future. With Curry’s ‘Splash Brother’ Klay Thompson having departed for the Dallas Mavericks, Chris Paul being waived, and looking to guarantee Jonathan Kuminga’s possible $215 million extension without going too much over the luxury tax aprons, the franchise is currently in a precarious position. However, by signing on their career games played leader for the 18 consecutive season, all doubts have been removed about a possible Curry exit as well. After all, the 36-year-old had recently gotten fans spooked by his actions.

Did Stephen Curry create doubts about his Warriors’ future by a simple Instagram bio change?

It was only four days ago when eagle-eyed fans caught a change when visiting Stephen Curry’s Instagram handle. The NBA star had apparently changed the “Guard for the @Warriors” in his bio to “Olympic Gold Medallist.”

The sole change was enough for mass hysteria to ignite amongst fans of the player and the franchise. After all, with the wound of Klay Thompson’s exit still fresh, not many were ready to see the key player of the Warriors depart. Comments like “OMG HES LEAVING” and “STEPH TO THE LAKERS CONFIRMED!”

The 2024 Paris Olympics provided a glimpse of what the star duo of LeBron James and Stephen Curry can achieve when teamed up. Therefore, with an earlier attempt having already been made at bringing LeBron to the Warriors before the trade deadline, several NBA analysts, including Nick Wright, questioned whether Curry could make the change instead. While the same did not occur, even the notion of it created panic.

For the NBA fans who recently began to question the future, the news of Stephen Curry’s extension is nothing short of good news. The player, his wife, and his four children will continue to reside in Atherton, California for another few seasons, while fans attending a game at the Chase Center will keep getting a glimpse of the sharpshooter for the time being.
