On 13th December 2023, the Executive VP and Head of Basketball Operations of the NBA Joe Dumars suspended Draymond Green for an indefinite amount of time. This came as a result of Dray striking the Suns‘ center Jusuf Nurkic in the face during the Warriors‘ 119-116 loss to the Suns the day before. Following this decision, a lot was said and done, but Draymond couldn’t shake the memory of one specific remark.
His former Warriors teammate Kevin Durant came out and said he hoped Dray got the help he needed. KD said this in the context of DrayMagic’s repeated history of unsportsmanlike acts on the court. Recalling KD’s comment, a now-reformed Draymond shares his take on it.

In a recent episode of The Draymond Green Show, the 2X All-NBA star admits that this initial thought was, “He said that?” Dray continues, “It really pis*ed me off when Kevin Durant said, ‘He wasn’t like that when I was around. I hope he get the help he needs.'” However, he let it sink in, thought about it, and arrived at a question, “What do you want the world to know about you?” Dray thought about this question and concluded that contrary to popular assumption, he is not the same Draymond from 2017.
“I’m not even close to the same Draymond that I was in 2017. But I quite frankly have not allowed anyone in the world to see that growth, to see that change,” he adds. Dray admits that, although over the years he allowed himself to be vulnerable and grow in areas he needed to work on, he did not show it to the world. So, going back to KD’s statement, Dray realized, “I think it’s time that the world get to know me, who I am.” On the flip side, KD’s comment actually helped Dray get that out to the world.

Looking at it from a different perspective
Draymond realized that if he looked at KD’s statement the right way, “He’s acknowledging essentially what I want the world to know about me.” Moreover, Dray admits that he was offended at KD, saying he needed help. But looking at it from a different mindset made him understand that the word “help” doesn’t have to be looked at from a negative lens and that maybe KD did not mean it negatively.
