“Only miss the sun when it starts to snow”—that’s how it should’ve felt around the Bay Area and for Klay Thompson. But is that the reality? Ahead of Klay’s return to face his former home, the Warriors are doing the best they can, well at this moment. A salute night has been planned for the former Splash Brother, but the interest isn’t quite mutual, to say the least.
The timing of it couldn’t have been better. Now it’s the best time to peer into Klay’s psyche before the game on Tuesday. That’s what Marc J. Spears of Andscape did. And some disturbing insights came out of it that wouldn’t give an uptick to Klay’s popularity in San Francisco.
“That chapter is over,” for Thompson, according to Spears. “I’m in the midst of trying to win here. There is no point in missing anything when we have such a great opportunity here to be great. There’s no point in looking back… I got to look forward. I got to try to give my best self here.”

After Kyrie Irving and Nikola Jokic put on a show at Ball Arena, which eventually ended in a 122-120 L for the Mavs, Klay doubled down on his current emotions. In the post-game presser, Klay said he is just focusing on moving on, and he made it clear. “I’m locked-in. Not really,” Thompson said to Andscape. “I will see them when I see them. That’s it.”
In the Ball Arena press room, Klay even reacted to the “Salute Captain Klay” night. Stating it would be fun for the fans, he switched gears and played down the hype of the game. According to him, it’s just another game with the added incentive of the NBA Cup.
Just like Klay, his former Warriors running mates are also all about handling the business. So when asked about the shooting guard’s return to the Chase Center, their message had a different tone to the brotherly love we’ve seen over the years.

Draymond Green and Stephen Curry react to Klay Thompson’s homecoming
During Sunday’s post-game press conference, when a reporter brought up Klay’s return to the arena, Draymond Green quickly shifted the focus, emphasizing the importance of Tuesday’s in-season tournament matchup. He added, “We bombed it last year, and I’m looking forward to having a better turnout in it this year” but made no mention of his former teammate.

Does Klay's indifference to his homecoming show growth or a disconnect with his Warriors legacy?

However, Stephen Curry took a different approach when asked about the same topic. The 36-year-old struggled to find the right words to describe what it would be like facing the Mavericks with Klay. “We’ve had homecomings before,” Curry said, “but nothing like this with the level of impact.” He acknowledged that Klay’s influence in the Bay Area was so overpowering, that it was hard for him to find words that could do justice.
Setting aside the special welcome that Curry feels Klay deserves, the Warrior lead is aware that they have to play the game like it’s a war and be mentally prepared for it. He still concluded by saying, “I just hope he feels the love because he deserves it.” What will happen when the Splash Brothers reunite after months in the Bay Area?
