Records are meant to be broken, that’s an established fact. Kevin Durant has ultimately and finally crowned himself as Team USA’s Olympic basketball emperor. In pursuit of winning Gold No. 4 in his distinguished career, the Slim Reaper broke the WNBA legend Lisa Leslie’s record. Coming off the bench in the quarter-finals clash against Brazil, KD dropped 11 points. Out of which, a dunk helped the superstar cross 488 career points, making him Team USA’s all-time scoring leader at the Olympics, which Leslie previously was.
Following the game, the veteran took to his X handle and penned a message to Lisa and to a ‘future star,’ who would break the record in the coming years. The post read, “Records are meant to be broken, I’ll hold on to this until another great comes along and passes me up… Lisa Leslie you are the gold standard in basketball, I appreciate your love and support throughout the years… much love to you always…it’s all about the gold baby. Let’s get it fellas.”
Importantly, the post also carried a memorable group photo of Team USA on a fleet of stairs, chilling. Kevin Durant not only hailed Lisa Leslie as the “gold standard” and expressed his admiration, but also called to achieve major duty. While the obvious duty is to win Gold, there’s another hidden motive.

And KD has likely directed it to Anthony Edwards, who’s already being compared by a section of the fanbase to a younger version of MJ. The Slim Reaper, in his X post, said that he would hold on to this record until someone surpasses him. Importantly, there’s a reason behind the hard-cased yet indirect Ant-Man plug-in.

While Kevin Durant led Team USA on the points leaderboard in the previous Olympic campaigns, this time, it’s the 23-year-old rising windmill dunk enthusiast. In the last 4 games, the star shooting guard has dropped 67 points with a high score of 26 against Puerto Rico. With the ideal possibility of playing two more games, Edwards can cross the three-digit mark in his debut Olympic appearance!
Lisa Leslie hails Kevin Durant and Team USA’s Paris dream
Moments after Team USA defeated Brazil, Lisa barged in with a note on her X handle. The 52-year-old wrote, “Congratulations @KDTrey5 I’m honored to have you break my @TeamUSA Olympic record!!! Our dedication to our country is evident and etched in stone!! Now go get another Gold medal, my friend! One Team, One Goal, Gold!” The 4x Olympic record gold medalist reminded KD that his job wasn’t finished yet until the gold was brought back home.
Apart from breaking Lisa Leslie’s scoring record, Kevin Durant can reach yet another milestone. Currently, KD holds the joint USA men’s record for most Olympic golds alongside Carmelo Anthony, 3. Hopefully, the superstar can have a crack at that all-time high checkpoint before likely calling it a day after this edition. Notably, WNBA legend Sue Bird holds the record of 5 golds in USA basketball history.
Next up, Kevin Durant & Co. face Serbia in the semi-finals. Team USA has already defeated the European side twice in the past weeks. While it may seem like a positive, it could go south as well. The Serbian side, coming off a major 26-point rescue mission crushing the Boomers, has entirely rested its trust on Nikola Jokić and expects the reigning NBA MVP to do his magic.
