Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden couldn’t fulfill the expectations of fans. The Big Three stint at the Brooklyn Nets didn’t win them any championship. Eventually, Harden shifted to the Philadelphia 76ers, Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, and Durant signed with the Phoenix Suns. Irving recently came up with a witty analogy to describe this superstar association.
Was it a forced marriage at the Nets? Many analysts and commentators have come up with speculations in the past as to why it didn’t work. But with words coming straight from the horse’s mouth, Irving recently had fans laughing with his analogy.

In an interview recently, Irving mentioned that it was unfortunate to have his name with James and KD as a part of NBA history what-ifs. Irving shared how he deeply valued the association and even was vocal about its importance, “ I’ve always told them that ‘this is bigger than just us being teammates right now.'”
The Nets were famously half an inch away from reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2021 when Kevin Durant’s shoe on the line prevented them from winning game 7 at home.
Kyrie maintained that the trio had a few good seasons but didn’t deliver on expectations. He expressed the pain, humorously though, of break-up in these words, “It’s kind of like one of those the time that got away, the girl that got away, it’ll hurt you for the rest of your life…”
Kyrie Irving on time with Harden/KD on the Nets:
“It’s kind of like the girl that got away… Looking back, you got a great bad wife, kids & you’re like, ‘Tss.’ I don’t wanna second guess it, I don’t wanna get in trouble with my wife. I’m not thinking about nobody else, baby.” 😂 pic.twitter.com/T7efBxkHCq

The superstar team didn’t get their hands on the championship trophy, but Durant in the past has tried to explain why.

Kevin Durant on why the partnership failed
The star-studded Nets team didn’t see the trio creating expected magic on the court. After his departure from Brooklyn, Durant shared his perspective about the same. He talked about his special four years at Brooklyn in his initial press conference while signing with the Phoenix Suns. He expressed his emotional attachment and gratitude for having learned much at Nets. Additionally, he gave his view as to why the star association didn’t come up to the expectations, “We just didn’t get on the court enough. I think when you see James, Kyrie, and myself, it was amazing basketball for 17 games though.”

In over a single year’s time, three came together to play a total of 16 games together. The injuries of Harden and Durant did lessen the games they played. But Irving’s refusal to undergo vaccination resulted in the trio coming together on the court.
