Before even a complete season, the Milwaukee Bucks parted ways with their head coach, Adrian Griffin, after 43 games. Despite a commendable 30-13 record, the moves come in light of what they anticipate could be a championship season. The franchise is yet to announce a successor. This leaves Assistant Coach Joe Prunty as the presumed frontrunner for the role. It will be the third name to command the Bucks’ ropes, after Mike Budenholzer and Griffin. Now, the Bucks are planning to introduce a new orchestrator, their third or possibly fourth head coach in a year.

Following a humbling defeat by the Miami Heat last year, the Bucks were sifting through certain coaching candidates. Ultimately, the decision to bring Griffin in was influenced by Giannis Antetokounmpo, giving them a green light. However, it was not Giannis’ resounding trust in Adrian’s coaching that led to the move.

NBA insider Marc Stein has succinctly captured the unexpected twist in the Milwaukee Bucks’ coaching saga. Stein suggests that, for the Bucks, “the desire to play for Griffin is better described as a determination to play for someone other than Nick Nurse.” This marks a significant deviation from the previous year, during which the Bucks were actively considering Nick Nurse for the coaching position. However, their former MVP Giannis opted to “champion Griffin” instead.

Notably, one of those seasons included the Raptors’ historic achievement of securing their first and only NBA championship in the 2018-19 campaign. Soon, Nurse got an offer from the Philadelphia 76ers, who are one of the frontrunners in the East.

The Bucks are eyeing Doc Rivers

The Athletic identifies Doc Rivers as the leading contender for the now-vacant coaching position in Milwaukee. According to their sources, the two sides are actively working towards finalizing a deal. However, another source suggests that while the Bucks may be strategically positioning Rivers within their franchise, actual discussions with the former championship coach have not yet commenced.

Adding an intriguing layer to the narrative is Doc Rivers’ recent history. Before Nick Nurse took over, Rivers held the reins in Philly. Over three seasons, he achieved an impressive 154-82 record and guided the team to three consecutive Conference Semifinals.
