Giannis skips a wedding to bash football—Is he right about America's misplaced sports priorities?

Giannis Antetokounmpo just had one of the biggest events of his life. He married long-time girlfriend Mariah Riddlesprigger. Far away from the US, the Bucks star made the occasion special with a 3-day celebration in Greece. But in between all this, his mind was stuck elsewhere with one of America’s most favorite activities.

That’s right! Giannis was eager about his NBA 2K25 ratings and when he got to know that, he even let Ronnie Singh, popularly known as Ronnie 2K, have a piece of his mind. The Digital Marketing Director for 2K Games revealed this encounter during the latest episode of The Stephen A. Smith Show and uncovered the story behind it.

When the curious analyst pressed for details, Singh revealed that he was surprised to find Giannis complaining about his rating. He further added, “I was like, you’re 97, you’re getting married this week. What’s going on? Like, you’re the 3rd highest-rated player at NBA 2K25. You should feel pretty good about that … whatever feels you, big man, it’s really amazing that caliber player, surefire hall of famer, is diverting his attention from his marriage to his 97 NBA 2K25 rating, it’s crazy.”

Giannis has the highest rating in the video game, matching his contemporaries Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic. However, the Greek Freak had more expectations, which led him to display his discontent. But what seemed humorous to Ronnie was that the ratings bothered the offensive center during his marriage ceremony. This just shows how passionate he is about the game. While Giannis was dissatisfied with the ratings, the host didn’t see anything wrong with it.

The ever-vocal Stephen A. Smith didn’t miss the opportunity to put forward his critical views. He started off by saying how much he adores Giannis and is aware of his superstar status. Highlighting his great impact on games, Smith pointed out his flaws. “He does have trouble with his free throw shooting, he has a limited perimeter shot and I think those two components should prevent you from being a 97 which is the highest rank score.”

Stating that the analyst went ahead to shoot Ronnie 2K with a question. Smith was curious to know how Giannis had the same rankings as Doncic and Jokic despite having the two liabilities to his game. Singh mentioned the one thing that made him different from the other two, his defensive capabilities. To which even Smith agreed.

What makes Giannis stand out is his versatility. There is no doubt that the 29-year-old is a pro when it comes to his offense. But he equally impresses with his defensive skills and his 2020 NBA Defensive Player of the Year title can vouch for it. Even in the previous season, the 2-time MVP balanced his 30.4 points and 11.5 rebounds per game by averaging 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocks.

However, he had to finish the season with an unfortunate injury, otherwise, he would have certainly made a difference in the Bucks’ playoff run. Driven by his previous season’s shortcomings and a supposed disputable rating, Giannis Antetokounmpo just might revive his MVP form.
