And the battle continues! With Anthony Edwards’ controversial comments allegedly disrespecting the NBA’s older generation, the battle of the eras has become a hot topic yet again. As expected, many current and former players have chimed in to reveal their stance. And the debate might escalate even further with current gen’s Michael Porter Jr. and Austin Rivers making a bold claim about Giannis Antetokounmpo, wondering how dominant he would be if he was dropped in Wilt Chamberlain’s era.
Addressing the topic, Rivers revealed an interesting dinner story about a friend telling him that Michael Jordan only had one impressive dunk in his legendary career. Taken aback by the statement, Austin said, “I was just like brother this stuff is just getting out of hand.” Then, he revealed his stance on comparing eras. “I hate comparing eras because the evolution of basketball is just like a real thing, just like the evolution of everything else. How can you compare a Bill Russell to a Center now?” With how the game has evolved since the inception of the league and how far technology has come, it’s almost unfair to compare the players from different times.
However, his guest on the Off Guard pod Michael Porter Jr. backed Ant-Man’s take with a bold claim, “No, it’s better now. You take some of these players now and put, bro if you put Giannis in that era, he would have been the best player to ever touch basketball.” Sure enough, the league has never seen a player like Giannis who aptly gets the nickname ‘The Greek Freak’ for his ability to run the floor and insane athleticism at nearly seven feet tall. Agreeing with the sentiment, Rivers said, “He would have broken Wilt’s record. He would’ve had a game with like a 140.” Sure, many people would find this statement disrespectful, but Rivers claimed, “that’s the truth.” But how realistic is this claim?

Could Giannis have surpassed Wilt Chamberlain’s historic game?
It was March 2, 1962. The Philadelphia Warriors faced the New York Knicks. But the only reason that game is remembered is Wilt’s 100-point performance. Yes, a feat that has never been replicated to this day remains one of the greatest individual achievements by any player. While most people only focus on the three digits, they tend to forget that Wilt had to take 63 shot attempts to reach that mark. And he missed nearly half his shots during the game. For perspective, Kobe Bryant took only 46 shot attempts when he scored 81 points against the Raptors.

On top of that, Wilt was facing a mediocre Knicks team that had the second-worst record that season. So, if a player like Giannis is put in a similar situation, there might be a legitimate chance of him breaking that record if he shoots at the same volume that Wilt did that night. Just last season, Giannis scored a career-high 64 points against a solid Pacers team on just 28 shot attempts. So, he could definitely reach triple digits if he got double the shots in any era. And the history that we know and cherish would be very different. What are your thoughts on the hot debate? Let us know in the comments below.?
