It’s always scary to see a player exit the court mid-game when they’re already playing through an injury. It’s double worse when it’s your team’s best player. But that’s exactly the misfortune that befell the Golden State Warriors when Stephen Curry went down with an injury against the Toronto Raptors.

You see, Steph Curry was already nursing a lower back injury as he played this game. And during one play, when he went to lay up the ball,  two Raptors players body-blocked him. Gravity did the rest as Steph landed hard on his back. He immediately grimaced as his body contorted on the floor. Even the commentators couldn’t help but acknowledge how nasty the way he fell was.

Things didn’t look good as he walked back to the locker room. And a few minutes ago, the Golden State Warriors’ PR team confirmed that Steph Curry would not be returning for the remainder of tonight’s game. The reason listed was a pelvic contusion, although we don’t know about its severity.

Regardless, when Christian Pulisic suffered a similar injury while playing for the US Men’s team in the 2022 World Cup, fans gained some insights into this injury and how long it takes to recover from it. They came from Dr. John Vasudevan, associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at UPenn when he spoke to TODAY.com.

Dr.Vasudevan revealed that it usually takes around one to three weeks to recover from an injury like this. He said it is possible to play without aggravating this injury but “it’s going be quite a nuisance to do so and still perform at a high level,” he added.

While the basketball world prays that Steph recovers soon, the Dubs nation has a different bone to pick. The ref tonight didn’t call a foul even after Steph went down. Moreover, the officiating in the Dubs’ recent games has been spotty at best. So, this incident was enough to set off a lot of Warriors fans on online tirades against NBA officials. Below, we’ve compiled some of the best reactions from fans online.

What’s your perspective on:

Can the Warriors survive without Steph Curry, or is their season doomed without their star player?

Fans cry foul against NBA referees after the nasty challenge that injured Stephen Curry goes unpunished

The knee-jerk reaction from fans was concern when they learned Steph would not be returning to the game tonight. “Get well soon🙏,” wrote a worried Warriors fan on X. It’s natural for the Dubs Nation to worry about the man responsible for their dynasty. And as Steph gets older and recovery times get longer, injuries like this will only make their anxiety worse.

Moreover, depending on how severe this injury is, Steph may miss the beginning of the postseason. “Get back soon. Need him for the stretch run,” said another member of the community on X. There’s less than a month left in the regular season. And if Steph misses the first round and the Warriors get eliminated, fans’ hopes of seeing Chef Curry and Playoffs Jimmy Butler play together could be ruined. Nevertheless, concern wasn’t the only thing on the Dubs Nation’s minds.

The officials pissed off a huge chunk of the fanbase by not calling a foul on this play. They bashed the referee’s lack of action. “F*** these NBA refs… that was a foul,” wrote an annoyed fan on X. Another netizen agreed, writing, “And no foul called on the play…disgraceful.”  It’s not hard to see why they’re so annoyed. The contact was clearly unnecessary and excessive. Moreover, it denied Steph a scoring opportunity on top of injuring him.

But fans seem to think why this is the case.@OfficialNBARefs this is a direct result of you guys allowing Steph to be fouled all game long for his entire career. Teams push limits bc they know they won’t be punished for it.” And this is true, teams sometimes do go overboard when trying to stop a surging Steph Curry. And tonight we saw how things can go wrong when players get overzealous in their attempts to thwart Steph.

The officiating in NBA games remains under heavy scrutiny and tonight just shows why. If someone as influential as Steph can’t get the right calls, what hopes do other players have? Nevertheless, we just hope that this injury isn’t very serious and Steph can resume playing soon.
