Remember Kevin Durant pulling up at Rucker Park? Surely you do because that was legendary. Now Victor Wembanyama is also taking the same route. The Spurs center is off to spend some time with the community of NYC and he has an open challenge for anyone brave enough to test him. But not at Rucker Park, nor will he be showing off his handles. The Frenchman is all about the brain and what is a better way to show that off than a game of chess?
Victor Wembanyama is making the most of his New York trip. After asking, “What are the best spots to play chess in NYC ??” the 20-YO turned up at Washington Square Park earlier today. And yes he had a chess board with him. He let the fans know via X that he would be there and posted, “Who wants to meet me at the SW corner of Washington Square park to play chess? Im there.”
However, some doubted Wemby wasn’t serious about it. But when he actually showed up, New York absolutely loved it. In fact, Wemby even showed his gratitude by posting a picture with the fans, captioning it, “Thanks for everyone who pulled up in the rain 😂🔥.” And the fans on the social media platform started the inevitable speculation of him lining up for the Knicks.

Knicks fans celebrate Victor Wembanyama’s social gesture
“Future Knick”, a fan wrote on X, days after Wemby’s spectacular performance against the franchise. Before stealing the show against the Nets, Wembanyama and the Spurs marched into Madison Square Garden to face the Knicks, where the French center delivered an impressive 42-18-4 stat line. While it couldn’t secure a win for his team, it was certainly enough to send a shockwave through the home crowd.

Another fan, sharing a similar view, wrote, “This is dope… he wants to be a Knick.” They believe Wemby’s is trying to win the hearts of New York City’s fans, as he could be setting his sights on becoming part of the Eastern franchise.
A Knicks fan, who claimed to be a follower of Wembanyama as well, stated, “Future Knick my goat on my team.” Currently, the Knicks already have Karl-Anthony Towns as their starting center, who is performing exceptionally well. Adding Wemby to the squad now would be difficult. The 20-year-old wouldn’t want to waste his talent by coming off the bench as a substitute for KAT, and the franchise wouldn’t be able to afford two centers on the court. So, Wemby is being viewed more as a future prospect for the Knicks rather than an immediate addition.

Someone shared a GIF of a woman shushing, with the caption, “Future Knick but you didn’t hear it from me.” Well, it’s too late now. The word’s already on the streets, and plenty of people have been talking about it. There were others who believed Wembanyama genuinely made the gesture, but more and more fans began hinting at a future trade to the Knicks.
It won’t be long before it reaches the analysts and spreads like wildfire. Whenever trade rumors involving Wemby arise, the Knicks will surely be a franchise that would be brought up in the discussion. Do you think this could be a possibility in the future?
