James Dolan seems intent on continuing his battles with the NBA. Dolan has made headlines recently for his controversial stance on league matters. More specifically, refusing to attend the NBA’s Board of Governors meetings. He stepped down from his posts on multiple BOG committees last November, the reason provided as “the conclusion that the NBA neither needs nor wants my opinion.”
In the latest of his attacks against Adam Silver’s NBA, the Knicks owner sent a letter, his second one, to the BOG. “In a letter sent to the NBA’s Board of Governors and obtained by ESPN, Knicks owner James Dolan continues to take issue with the league office and tells teams that he’ll vote no on the league’s proposed operating budget for 2024-2025 and the election of a new BOG chair. Dolan cites lack of transparency on both processes. The Board of Governors meeting and vote is set for Tuesday in New York.”
It honestly comes as an unsurprising move, given that the 69-year-old has been at it for quite some time. MSG Networks executive chairman’s resignation from his BOG post came shortly after ESPN’s Baxter Holmes had reported that the NYC hoops franchise was seeking over $10 million in damages from their lawsuit against their Atlantic rivals, the Raptors.

While it is more of a legal matter, a court filing obtained by Holmes saw the Knicks request Commissioner Silver be left out of the arbitration process with a neutral third party called upon to resolve matters unbiasedly. And what was the reason? The NBA Commissioner’s close relationship with Larry Tanenbaum – Toronto’s parent company, Maple Leaf & Sports Entertainment’s chairman.
Fast forward a little and you will once again find James Dolan’s heavy criticism of the league’s new 11-year $76 billion media rights deal. As per the scathing email he sent, the New York native was displeased with the idea of revenue sharing. He cited that the new deal “threatens to completely eliminate [RSNs] without a comparable replacement offered by the league.” RSNs like his own MSG Network. Get the picture?
But it seems like Dolan’s antics have become quite irksome for fans. And they had no qualms about calling him out with a much larger agenda in mind.

“How long until he’s gone? Ruining that team.” This was one of the comments from a user in response to Woj’s report. Clearly, a sentiment echoed by many Knicks fans over the years, it seems like his latest antics at putting the team in a tough spot had truly annoyed the fans.

Another individual has raised a somewhat controversial statement. “For someone so rich, he is very frugal with this organization.” Needless to say, the focus turned to this particular comment. Despite being exasperated with him, the one thing nearly all Knicks fans stand by, including the former player, Kenyon Martin, is that James Dolan might be a lot of things, but frugal is not one of them.

However, the criticisms keep coming. Here’s another one who seems to think along the same lines as our friend above. “He’s cheap.” The context for this, though, was different. This was a reply to a fan who requested a breakdown of the report in ‘layman’s terms.‘ And apparently, our helpful user explained it in the most succinct manner – just two words.

And yet another one said, “Seems like maybe he should be removed.” If they are referring to the BOG, then fear not, he’s already off the chair. In the wake of his resignation, James Dolan passed the duties to Knicks general counsel Jamaal Lesane, who will serve as a proxy. If they meant it in relation to removing himself from the Knicks organization, then good luck.
Finally, this individual could probably give Dolan a run for his money in terms of scathing replies. “Biggest wet wipe in the NBA. Knicks would have unquantifiable swagger with Dolan out of the picture.” We’ll leave it to you to ponder on this.
