Fans widely considered the 2018 LeBron James the greatest version of himself. When he took the Cleveland Cavaliers to the four successive NBA Finals, he achieved his peak. The basketball community widely appreciated his preference to test free agency and join the Los Angeles Lakers.

The young 2018-19 Lakers side showed huge potential but his injury forced him to miss his first playoff appearance in nine years. However, the following season, the Lakers front office traded most of their young core; everyone, from Brandon Ingram to Josh Hart to land Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans.

LeBron James’ former Lakers teammate, Josh Hart, found his way to the New York Knicks via various trades. Playing exceptionally well with the Knicks, Hart exceeded expectations tied to his $12.9 million player option for the 2023-24 season. It contributed significantly to the team’s success. Aiming for free-agent market exploration, Hart eventually opted to accept the player option and continue with the Knicks.

On the other hand, Knicks is now looking to reward his performance with a substantial four-year, $75 million extension.

The Knicks’ trade with the Portland Trail Blazers brought Hart back to the city reuniting him with his former college teammate, Jalen Brunson. They also added another former Villanova Wildcat, Donte DiVincenzo, to the mix. Brunson, who recently hosted a charity golf event, recently stressed the importance of education over an NBA career. Most of his Knicks teammates showed up at the event, including Hart.

The roster largely remains intact from the previous season, with DiVincenzo stepping in for the traded Obi Toppin. This cohesive group has presented an intriguing and challenging future for the Knicks, who are hoping to build on their successes.

The Path to an Extended Stay

Since joining the Knicks, Hart has been a standout player, making a significant impact by the end of the season. With an average of 10.2 points and seven rebounds in 25 appearances, his contributions have played a vital role in securing the team’s fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and winning their first playoff series in a decade.

Despite the rumors of potential offers from other teams, Hart has shown a strong inclination towards remaining in New York. The Knicks confidently expect to finalize an extension worth $75 million over four years in August. This will help secure Hart’s talent and dedication for the long term.
