The world witnessed in shock as Steve Kerr benched Jayson Tatum on two separate occasions during the Paris Olympics. There was even a moment when the head coach reportedly told JT that he would not play the game just minutes before tip-off. Seeing the superstar who had just come off leading his team to an NBA Championship not get any time on the court surely did not sit well with fans. But how did Jaylen Brown feel throughout this whole ordeal? Well, the reigning Finals MVP finally spilled the beans.
Addressing his thoughts about Tatum’s benching, JB said, “For sure, I’m biased when answering this by the way totally. Jayson, I think he handled it extremely well. You know that just says a lot about JT’s character.” Sure enough, Tatum put on a brave front even when things were not going his way in Paris. But Brown knew exactly how his teammate was feeling, “I know he was pissed for sure.”
Moreover, Kerr’s treatment of Tatum even frustrated JB, “I remember texting him and being like you know like ‘I’m mad for you.” Obviously, while JT was dealing with the disrespect in Paris, Brown was also dealing with issues of his own back home as he was not happy with being snubbed from the Olympics roster. Moreover, Brown even vented his frustration out on Nike, who he believed played a part in his snubbing.

However, he was proud of how the Boston Celtics star handled the whole situation as he remarked on The Stephen A. Smith Show, “I thought he handled it well. I thought he handled it with class.” While detractors have constantly tried to pit Brown and Tatum against each other, they have always backed each other every step of the way.
Jaylen Brown talks about his ‘Championship’ bond with Jayson Tatum
Praising Jayson Tatum for the way he stayed focused during the Olympics despite not getting his desired playing time, Jaylen Brown even revealed how he would have handled the same situation, “I would have handled it probably the same way you know what I mean. No different. I think that’s just you know our character kind of exudes outwardly who we are inwardly.” So, doesn’t matter how much getting benched hurt Tatum internally, he always did what Kerr asked of him and achieved the ultimate goal of winning his second gold medal.
Moreover, Brown even highlighted how his relationship with Tatum has stood the test of time despite many telling them for years that they wouldn’t be successful together, “Me and him have a championship level relationship.” Obviously, the five Conference finals appearances and one championship proves that they have great chemistry. And JB is proud of the bond he shares with Tatum, “We’ve been able to build a bond and been able to create an environment that we wanted to see and we’ve been able to grow together as human beings, as individuals and when you win a championship man, that’s special.” And they hope to win another title together this season.
