Is Jokic's 'disinterest' in MVP titles a sign of humility or just pure dominance?

The reigning NBA MVP, Nikola Jokić, is having a great season so far. Despite a few speed-breakers here and there, the Denver Nuggets are doing a good job. Well, major credit goes to the Joker for his repeated triple-doubles, which have now added to the many achievements of the Serbian giant. Many strongly believe that Nikola Jokić will most likely be the MVP of this season, too. Moreover, if this happens, he’ll become the only player second to LeBron James to have 4 badges. But does the 29YO center want the title?

Ex-Celtics point guard Jeff Teague believes the ‘reluctant’ Nikola Jokić doesn’t want to be the MVP. Speaking on the Club 520 Podcast, the former NBA player shared his views on the All-Star supergiant. Joker is known for his composed nature which often comes across as ‘disinterest.’ However, despite not wanting to become the Most Valuable Player for the 4th time, he might be the only one running the race.

Teague noted on the podcast, “He is going for another MVP, and he doesn’t even care. Reluctantly. Like, he doesn’t want to win MVP. He is just better than everybody at basketball.” The ex-hooper further added, “He doesn’t even like basketball. Likes horses, bro. He is the best player in basketball. You gotta respect his day job, bro. That’s what he does for a living.”

Nikola Jokic’s impressive run for the Denver Nuggets handed the Oklahoma City Thunder their first defeat of the season. The Serbian touched a special feat on Wednesday’s day after logging his fourth triple-double in eight games. He scored 23 points, pulled off 20 rebounds, and 16 assists.

He became the second player since Wilt Chamberlain in 1968 to have a 20/20/15 game, joining current teammate Russell Westbrook (who did it on April 2, 2019). Meanwhile, Jokic is averaging 28.8 ppg this season which is impressive. But, it is his alleged reluctant nature that makes him an eyesore for many. “Not dedicated,” “time pass,” and so on have been common taunts in the Nuggets foreman’s NBA career.

Meanwhile, an apology has come his way from a former NBA hooper who drew some intriguing comparisons recently. Lou Williams surely faced some flak for his thoughts on who’s better, Nikola Jokić or Karl-Anthony Towns!

Lou Williams admits his error in comparing Nikola Jokić and KAT

What’s your perspective on:

Is Jokic's 'disinterest' in MVP titles a sign of humility or just pure dominance?

Have an interesting take?

Former LA Clippers icon Lou Williams has been a three-time Sixth Man of the Year. He’s been in the sport long enough to well understand how things work. But he might have stepped a bit too far recently. Speaking on FanDuel’s Run It Back show this week, the 38YO point guard gave an unexpected opinion on Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns and 3x MVP Nikola Jokić. “Is KAT a more skilled guy? Absolutely,” said Williams.

Williams added, “(But) I think Jokic is more impactful (in) the way that he approaches the game. He doesn’t try to go out and be the best shooter – he tries to get the ball to the best shooter. He puts guys in a position to be successful outside of himself. I think that’s what sets them apart.”

Well, as expected, criticism dropped in within minutes, and well, maybe the game against OKC Thunder was needed for Nikola Jokić to remind Lou why he’s the reigning MVP. So, now, the ex-Clippers hooper has admitted his folly. Coming back on the Run It Back show, he shared, “I’m real enough to admit that I was wrong. I bumped my head, and as a result, Jokic went out and put up these gaudy, amazing numbers with a dub.” Looks like Lou Williams had a revelation after what unfurled at Ball Arena on Wednesday.

Nikola Jokić’s unmatched skill and humble demeanor continue to shine through, even if he doesn’t chase the spotlight. His game speaks volumes, and despite his reluctance, he’s proving time and again that he’s the best in the league. With each triple-double, Jokic reaffirms why he’s the reigning MVP and a true basketball phenom. Even skeptics like Lou Williams can’t help but respect his impact on the game. The Joker’s journey is far from over, and it’s clear—he’s writing his legacy.
