The Golden State Warriors experienced a shocking incident that changed their franchise’s reputation in 2022. A franchise that thrived with success and togetherness was gutted by a punch from Draymond Green. The 33-year-old forward punched the Warriors’ 24-year-old prodigy, Jordan Poole, during practice. Things haven’t been the same in the Bay Area since. Almost a year after this incident, Poole was traded to the Washington Wizards by the Warriors to acquire Chris Paul.

Chris Paul came into the Warriors franchise as a 38-year-old veteran, chasing championships. The 12-time All-Star has had a celebrated career in the NBA over the course of 18 years. However, Paul has never won a ring in the league. Despite not winning championships, Paul has a reputation as a terrific leader. He often elevates the performance of any franchise he plays for. But the Warriors already have the leadership of their “Big Three”, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. This aspect was pointed out by veteran NBA analyst Brian Geltzeiler, also hinting at another civil war in Dub Nation.

The Warriors’ move to acquire Chris Paul during the offseason sent shockwaves across the NBA world. Their 24-year-old prodigy, Jordan Poole, became a part of the Wizards after the trade. The Warriors had offered Poole a whopping $128M extension, just a year before trading him. However, Stephen Curry and Co. seemed thrilled to have Paul on their roster. Keeping their past rivalry aside, Curry extended a warm welcome to Paul in the Golden State. However, Paul’s arrival in Dub Nation also raised several questions.

Paul is undoubtedly one of the best point guards in NBA history. The NBA Top 75 List member has, time and again, shown his incredible leadership skills in multiple franchises. However, the Warriors’ core is not short on leaders. Veteran analyst Brian Geltzeiler pointed this out.

On a radio appearance, Geltzeiler discussed Paul’s role in the Warriors roster. “If Chris Paul isn’t onboard with the role that is envisioned for him, the locker room might not be a peaceful place“, he said. He further mentioned, “Chris Paul is very used to walking into locker rooms and being the leader and taking things over and dictating the culture. We don’t dictate the culture here”.

He also stated the situation in the Warriors’ locker room. “The culture runs through Steph Curry and by extension Klay Thompson and especially Draymond Green; so you’re coming in here to play a role on the back side of your career“, Geltzeiler said.

However, he also shared how Paul’s situation in Dub Nation could potentially lead to more trouble for the 7-time champions.

Golden State might be in for another civil war

The Golden State Warriors core of Curry, Thompson, and Green has experienced tremendous success over the years. The Warriors Big Three has won 4 championships together, defining an entire era of their dominance. With an unparalleled experience in championship runs in recent years, the Warriors know exactly what it takes to win. Chris Paul, however successful as a leader, has not experienced the kind of success the Warriors core possess.

Geltzeiler had some interesting takes while talking about Chris Paul’s significance. “Chris Paul is a Hall of Fame point guard. For my money, he’s one of the top 10 that’s ever played the position… But you’re not that guy anymore“, he opined.

He went on to talk about Paul’s potential. He says, “You still could be really really helpful and really really useful…. but you have to be willing to step into that role, that’s part of how winning is done“.

He also criticized the 38-year-old’s attitude towards his role in the Golden State. “You’ve gotten to one Conference Final in your storied career. You’re walking into a place where… there’s something you can learn from them…. not exactly something that is a foreshadowing of peaceful things to come”, he strongly stated.

With the Warriors already having a star point guard, their starting lineup cannot be predicted yet. Having built a terrific resume as a leader, Chris Paul may be unhappy with a role off the bench.

Will this lead to complications in the locker room? Is another civil war brewing in Golden State? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
