“I want to see me getting my joy back playing basketball. Wherever that may be, we’ll find out here pretty soon.” Jimmy Butler hinted after tonight’s loss to the Pacers that he was not satisfied with his current situation in Miami. Turns out, he requested a trade from the Heat soon after his public comments and is open to playing anywhere other than South Beach.
With his departure seeming imminent before the February deadline, these are the five potential destinations best suited for the six-time All-Star.
Golden State Warriors

Well, Joe Lacob is desperately looking for a new star in the trade block to pair alongside Stephen Curry. Of course, the Warriors had a tough end to the year as they lost nine of their thirteen games in December. Moreover, they were the worst shooting team in the league last month. Surely, adding Butler to the mix will make them a significantly better squad and even boost their chances of contending for a title. In return, the Warriors can offer Pat Riley their young core of Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski, who can turn into future stars in Miami. Obviously, the Warriors will have to give up key assets to make room for Jimmy’s $146 million contract.
Brooklyn Nets
Unlike the Warriors, the Nets are currently focused on a rebuild. That’s why they have already offloaded multiple stars via trades, including Dennis Schroder and Dorian Finney-Smith. Moreover, they are expected to ship away Cameron Johnson in the coming days. Maybe there could be a scenario where they package a deal with the Heat to send Cam to Miami and get Butler in exchange. Although adding an aging star would go against their rebuilding plan, the Nets would get a solid veteran leader to build a culture within the team.
Houston Rockets
While the Nets are a solid option, Butler made it clear that he wants to win now. Especially because he is in the later stages of his career. “I wanna be back to somewhere dominant and I wanna hoop.” He remarked. Well, moving to Houston could align with his goal. Although the Rockets are a young team, they have shown tremendous growth and currently rank third in the West. The only thing stopping them from becoming title contenders is a legitimate superstar with playoff experience. That’s where Butler could become an enormous asset as he has led the Heat to the NBA Finals twice.
Sure, Ime Udoka has no intention of shaking up his young core, but the Rockets could make that deal happen without having to give them up. By offering Pat Riley draft picks and the young stars who are not a key part of the Rockets’ rotation. Meanwhile, Butler’s addition will get them a consistent 20-point scorer, who plays even better during the playoffs.
Dallas Mavericks
If you’re looking to win now, what better team to join than the one that reached the NBA Finals last season? Yes, Dallas is reportedly one of Butler’s preferred destinations as he seeks a trade. Surely, Butler joining forces with Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson would make the Mavs instant title contenders and likely get them over the hump. Moreover, his addition would also improve the Mavs’ defense, making up for Luka and Kyrie’s lack of it during the postseason.

Meanwhile, the Heat can get pieces like PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford in return, who align with Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo’s timeline for another title run in the coming years.
Phoenix Suns
Well, the Suns are one team that has been linked to Butler for quite some time. It is clear that the Bradley Beal experiment has not worked for them. And they are reportedly looking for a Butler-Beal exchange with Riley’s team. Unfortunately, a recent report by Evan Sidery suggested that the Heat have ‘no interest’ in acquiring Beal in a trade that involves Jimmy. But that was before Butler demanded a trade. Now that he has made his decision, Riley could revisit the idea of trading him for Beal, as both teams get an All-Star caliber player in exchange. Meanwhile, Beal has no problem being a secondary superstar as that’s his current role in Phoenix.

While there are multiple suitable options, Butler “does not plan to furnish the Heat with a list of favored destinations.” It looks like he just wants out of Miami. So, it’s now up to Riley to figure out the best deal for his franchise. For the time being, Jimmy is willing to do whatever the Heat ask him to do on the court. Where do you think Butler will land?
