The NBA has issued a 25-game ban without pay to Tristan Thompson of the Cleveland Cavaliers for breaching the league’s anti-drug policy. Thompson tested positive for two banned drugs, as disclosed in Tuesday’s official announcement, leading to the suspension.
The substances in question are known as Ibutamoren and SARM LGD-4033. The NBA prohibits Ibutamoren because it promotes the release of human growth hormone and can enhance lean body mass. And SARM LGD-4033 on the other hand is a selective androgen receptor modulator and another anabolic agent on the league’s prohibited list.

Notably, the NBA stopped testing players for marijuana in 2021. However, random drug testing for human growth hormone and other performance enhancers continues.

Despite Thompson being suspended for an extended period, it is not going to have any major repercussions on the Cavs as his performance is currently in a huge slump. He is recording a career-low average of 3.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. So who will replace the 32-year-old veteran and aid the City of Light in the frontcourt?

With this development, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ frontcourt rotations will undergo substantial changes. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has Jarrett Allen, Damian Jones, and two-way player Isaiah Mobley as his primary options at center.
Therefore, Bickerstaff is expected to switch to short rotations and versatile players like Dean Wade who will potentially fill in as the power forward of the team. But as Cleveland is on a dream run, changing strategies might just end up costing them their spot in the playoffs. The Cavaliers are currently boasting an 8-game winning streak and a respectable 26-15 record. Due to that, they are ranked fourth in the Eastern Conference and are one of the hottest teams in the NBA.
