The news of Sonya and Dell Curry separating after 33 years of marriage had rattled the NBA world in 2021. The pair met while studying at Virginia Tech, and their love story soon blossomed into marriage in 1988. Former Charlotte Hornets star Dell Curry then went on to have a long NBA career, spanning 16 years. However, life was not easy at home for Sonya Curry, the young mom of three, with her husband always on the road.
As a result, she had to do a lot of the upbringing herself. The couple then decided to end their marriage after testing out a trial separation for over a year. Somewhere in the midst of this, she felt like she was losing herself and turned to worldly things. After the ugly divorce, Stephen Curry’s?mother opened up about her struggles of marrying an NBA player and going through an identity crisis.

In 2022, she starred as a guest on the “Jemele Hill is Unbothered” to discuss her memoir Fierce Love. The book chronicles her journey from her tragic childhood in Virginia to becoming a mother of three and stepping out of the shadows of her husband to establish a name for herself. In the book, she also opens up about spirituality and “life-sustaining connection to God and faith”.
Being married to a star athlete is not for the weak. Dealing with the intense public scrutiny and constantly being in the limelight takes a toll on one’s mental health. The former volleyball player divulged her struggles as an early mom and an NBA wife. “I always knew I was going to be a young mom. That was just something in me. But getting married and being in the NBA, trying to manage how I am gonna be a wife? How am I gonna be the wife of an NBA player? How can I manage that scene? I have got three kids and honestly, just growing up, I was finding ways to kind of just be Sonya. I was just struggling with how to hold on to Sonya in the midst of all of this going on,” she said.
She further added, “And so finding things in the world you know, hanging out, clubbing, but I got three kids. Every relationship went through challenges, being young and in the NBA“.

In the midst of the identity crisis and early struggles, the mom of Stephen Curry found solace in religion and God. The educator related the story of how her spiritual journey began, ?One day at church I was just sitting there?the pastor just seemed like he?s talking to you. There could be 10,000 people in the room, and he?s like you. And he talked about if you?re tired of doing the same ole same ole, just give Jesus a try.?

She continued, ?And I just got up, went to the front, and it was just like I can?t do this. I don?t want this anymore, so Lord I?ma try you. You?ve said all that you are, let?s see. I?ma go for it.?
While life certainly hasn’t been easy for 4x NBA Champion’s mom, she has managed to carve out a successful career for herself while also raising three extremely talented kids. Her inspirational journey will surely motivate many to find their purpose in life.
