The NBA is a league that has been prevalent for 77 years. Many basketball legends have mesmerized the NBA world over the years. These legends paved the way for the upcoming NBA talents to showcase their brilliance. However, every upcoming talent needed somebody to look up to. The Atlanta Hawks point guard, Trae Young too, had his idol while growing up.

Trae Young is one of the most touted modern-day point guards in the NBA. His extraordinary shot-making skill and vision have earned him high acclaim. Although his skills did not come to him overnight. The 24-year-old has put a lot of work into his game but naturally needed someone to base his game on. A former MVP served as the perfect option for Young. He recently opened up about how he looked up to this NBA great, also drawing praises from the former 3 time All-Star, Gilbert Arenas.

Trae Young is not among the tallest player in the NBA. The 6’1 guard may not have much of a presence above the rim, but he makes up for it with his exceptional abilities. As a guard, Young has every skill required to set himself apart from the rest. However, Young, too, needed inspiration to perfect his craft. This came from none other than the 2 time MVP, Steve Nash.

Steve Nash had one of the greatest careers in the NBA. Despite not being able to win a championship, the 6’3 guard left an indelible mark on the NBA. Hence, Young chose to model his game on Nash’s brilliance. While discussing the 8-time All-Star, Arenas shared his personal experience of playing against him.

I don’t know if he’s ever said who’s a** he busted the most. I’m pretty sure it’s mine’s. Because he only averaged 17. Against me, probably like 30-something“, said the former Washington Wizards guard. He further adds, “I went at him so much to the point where he had to play offense too. I didn’t like him too much when he was in that mode. Can we just double him so he can pass it to your account?

Trae Young, too, shared how he took inspiration from the 2 time MVP. “That was my like, probably favorite player of growing up“, he claimed. He further mentioned, “I knew I wasn’t going to be that tall….I just watched a lot of him, CP so that’s crazy“.

Steve Nash was no ordinary point guard back in his day. The Canadian legend not only won two MVP awards ahead of the late Kobe Bryant but also put up some staggering numbers as a point guard. He was dubbed “Mr. 90 50 40” for cracking the 90/50/40 club 4 times between 2005-2010. He also had one of the most spectacular prime years during his stint with the Phoenix Suns.

Kid Canada was also one of the greatest playmakers to grace the NBA. He won the assist title 5 times in his tenured career. Despite not being the tallest player on the court in a time when the bigs dominated the league, Nash established his name as one of the best players of that era. He also eventually got the Hall of Fame honor and was named on the NBA Top 75 List. His phenomenal career paved the way for players like Trae Young to excel in the league.
