Is Luka Doncic's $100k bet a power move or just playful banter with Dereck Lively?

43 million dollars! That’s how much money Luka Doncic will make in salary this season. But that does not mean the Slovenian sensation is going to miss out on the chance of making an extra buck on the side. Well, he did exactly that on Sunday as he allegedly took up a $100,000 bet from his teammate Dereck Lively II. Sure enough, Luka won the wager by hitting a miraculous shot. And his latest online activity has left the hoops community accusing him of pushing his younger teammate to hold his end of the bargain.

As per an X account named NBA Alerts, Luka recently began following Dereck Lively II on social media. Having been teammates for over a year, it seems strange that Doncic wasn’t already following him. But why now? It could be because of their latest bet.

During the Mavs’ Fan Jam event last weekend, Luka was spotted standing under the basket, holding a ball in his hands. But he was surprisingly looking at the basket on the other end, with Lively standing next to him and saying something in his ear.

It soon became clear that Luka Doncic was about to attempt a full-court shot. As he threw the ball up in the air, in a one-handed hook shot, his prayer was answered and the ball went straight through the net! The crowd erupted and Lively was left shellshocked after the Slovenian hit the insane trick shot in his first attempt. After completing the challenge, he headed straight to the locker room with a smile on his face, while an awestruck Dereck hit Doncic with a towel…

Later that day, the video went viral and Luka Doncic tweeted, “100k @DereckLively” revealing that Mavs Center had bet $100,000 on whether he would make that stunning full-court shot. However, Lively then denied his veteran leader’s claim on X saying, “Man the bs I see everyday is crazy.” With the youngster denying the wager, the timing of Luka following him on his socials looked fishy to fans.

Many assume Luka Doncic “got his bread,” as they remind him to pay up an old bubble bet!

Sure enough, many fans saw Luka Doncic following Dereck Lively after winning the alleged bet as a power move from the Mavs leader, as one person wrote, “He needs his 100k.” Maybe following his younger teammate now is his way of reminding him that he owes him money. Meanwhile, one netizen claimed that Lively might have paid off the bet, and in return, the hooper finally began following him on social media, to reciprocate the kindness, over a year after they became teammates, “He got his bread.”

However, many fans even claimed that Luka Doncic is just trolling because of the timing of the incident, as comments like “This mf” and “Luka trolling like always” began flooding in. While he is a monster on the court when he plays, the hooper does have a funny side to him off the court, which is evident from the way he interacts with the media and his teammates.

One fan turned the tables on Luka and reminded him of an old bet that he lost- “Lmaooo Luka wants that 100k bad but still hasn’t paid @jj_redick from their NBA bubble bet.” Obviously, the netizen was referring to the Lakers boss’ viral tweet from 3 years ago after the Slovenian had inked a $207 million supermax extension, “Still owes me $1700 from cards. Please @CashApp me @luka7doncic.”

Yes, while Luka Doncic seemingly urges Dereck Lively II to pay $100,000 from his comparatively lower $5 million salary, he himself owes quite a few thousand to JJ. Interestingly, if the Slovenian had to pay up 100k or the amount that he owes LeBron James‘ boss, his $43 million paycheck would help him make $16,000 per minute. Which means he would take less than a quarter to make $100,000!
