The rumors and whistles of Stephen Curry retiring from the NBA are a never-ending discussion and resurface every fortnight. But this time, it gained even more gravity with a new role, which is on the horizon for Steph. The NBA’s all-time leading three-point scorer is moving back to where his basketball career took flight. His alma mater Davidson College extended an offer to Curry to become the assistant general manager for the basketball program. It’s an enticing full-circle moment for the Baby Face Assassin who hopes to create a successful program for Davidson College. So, does this mean he is done playing in the NBA?

A sudden call for retirement would sure be a shock considering how successful the Golden State Warriors have been since adding Jimmy Butler. And all the Curry stans can rest assured. The Chef still has some years left to cook some more sizzling performances in the NBA. Stephen Curry will work with Davidson while actively being an NBA athlete because there’s no word, not even a drop of hint if he is leaving the league (for his new role).

The new role is a new opportunity for our Baby Assassin, as this marks the first time that a U.S. professional major sports athlete will have an administrative role with an NCAA team. And Curry is pumped to get things underway.

Davidson College released a statement about his hire and the 36-year-old promises to create a wonderful atmosphere at his alma mater. “The Davidson experience is top notch…  I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high character student athletes to have that same experience,” said Curry.

Since Curry’s run that saw Davidson College grace the Elite Eight round for just the third time in its history, things have been difficult. The university is yet to get out of the second round after missing the tournament in the past two years. With Curry’s inclusion, they will hope to not attract top college athletes. Not only that, but the college could foster a winning culture, much like Curry has with the Warriors.

A job for the future for Stephen Curry?

Although Stephen Curry isn’t retiring right now, the date isn’t so far long as it once was. At the age of 36, many projects the current contract for Stephen Curry, which runs till the 2026-27 season, will be his last season. Hence, there’s a three-year window that remains for one of the most electrifying players in the league’s history.

And Curry has made peace with the date approaching. “It’s okay to accept and acknowledge that the end is near. But only because it allows you to enjoy what’s happening right now. But I think the more you talk about it and the more you acknowledge it, the more it levels up the sense of urgency in the moment, now,” said the four-time champion.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Stephen Curry's magic at Davidson College revive their basketball glory days while still dazzling in the NBA?

Have an interesting take?

From his performances, it’s hard to see how Curry is even close to losing his celebrated love story with a basketball. In his 16th season, he is averaging 30 points and 8 assists over a five-game stretch. Furthermore, the Warriors have been red hot since the All-Star break, winning eight of their nine games since.

But the sad truth is, this won’t go on for long. Stephen Curry won’t be stepping into half-court and taking audacious threes for many more years. These final few years hence might be the most important as he continues to play at an elite level. From what’s visible, the two-time MVP could step down on his terms and at the top.

The job as an assistant general manager at his alma mater could be one of his many future endeavors that follow after his retirement. His reign at the post and his love for the job will surely factor in. However, if there’s something Stephen Curry sets his eyes on, he generally achieves it.

That benchmark will probably remain now that he joins Davidson. The same passionate and determined Curry, but only a different version that is away from the hardwood yet so close.
