OnlyFans creators out-earning NBA stars—Is this a sign of society's misplaced values?

One piece of advice that many marketing gurus around the world give is that “sex sells”. It certainly turned out to be true. A popular London-based video subscription company has taken down the NBA. The Stephen Curry and LeBron James-led league is one of the richest leagues on the planet. And of course, the superstars of the league wallow in wealth. However, times have changed. Now, OnlyFans creators are believed to earn more than NBA players.

By now, we have made it clear that the OnlyFans creators as a whole, for a fact, have earned more than the NBA players. The adult platform came to the center stage during the COVID-19 pandemic. And within four years, it turned out to be a success story. It achieved something that the 77-year-old NBA couldn’t.

While the platform witnessed a steady rise in its growth every year, the year 2023 was epic. Compared to the $5.5 billion revenue in 2022, the creators added another billion in the following year and recorded a whopping $6.6 billion fee from the fans. That’s a phenomenal growth of 19% in a single year. Meanwhile, on the other end, the biggest basketball league in the world is reportedly shy of this number by $1.6 billion.

How much do NBA players earn in a calendar year?

Over the last few days, there were numerous claims online stating that OnlyFans creators earn more than NBA players. It only left us to fact-check the claim and provide you with accurate information. According to Variety, the adult platforms’ creators have collected a record-breaking fee of $6.6 billion in the year 2023.

According to Hoopshype, the total payroll of NBA players for the 2023-24 season is $5.02 billion. And, looking at the projected salaries until the 2027-28 season, it’s unlikely that the NBA goes beyond $6 billion. Contrastingly, OnlyFans has had an upward graph where the number of content creators and fans is increasing steadily.

The platform reportedly saw a whopping 28% rise in subscribers last year, with 305 million total fans logging into the website. Similarly, the website saw an increase in the number of creators as well. As of 2023, there are 4.1 million creators in the business. This is where we have to get technical.

Have an interesting take?

Do OnlyFans creators truly earn more than NBA players?

The answer to the question will, be negative. Usually, the NBA features less than 500 players in a season. However, the numbers seemed to have increased following the introduction of the ‘Two-way contract’. So, roughly around 550 players are playing in a single season. In that sense, the average annual salary for the 2023-24 season comes up to $9.7 million per player.

Whereas, in the case of OnlyFans with 4.1 million creators, the average salary per creator would come up to $1,600. Well, technically, each NBA player earns more than an individual creator. However, there are fair chances that some creator may earn much more, considering their popularity. Notably, one of the creators, Bryce Adams, who has a 10-acre property, where she runs her show, said, “People don’t understand the scale of the opportunity. I mean, really: You can make your own world,” in an interview with the Washington Post.

While OnlyFans creators as a group collectively earned more than NBA players in 2023, the average salary of an NBA player remains significantly higher than an individual OnlyFans creator. Top NBA players consistently out-earn most creators on the platform.
