Anthony Edwards and fines? They have been going hand in hand this season. It’s almost like he competes with himself in increasing the number. Strange, right? But there’s more to the story than just fines and technicals. Rumor has it there’s a hidden loophole in Adam Silver’s system. And if the Timberwolves play it smart, Ant might catch a break. He has already given up $285K this season in fines, and more would be nothing less than a headache.
Tim MacMahon and Brian Windhorst might have a better insight into this matter. Speaking on The Hoop Collective podcast the analysts shed some light now how Anthony Edwards could potentially escape the techs just like Luka Dončić did during Mark Cuban’s time. Well, there have been several talks about the latter previously, so maybe if the Timberwolves and Antman figured out how the Mavs went around, things could be easy.
MacMahon noted: “Ant is too shy now. Those 16 T’s for the superstars. Well, the league tends to be pretty lenient on the reviews of those things.” Meanwhile, Windy reminded: “I’m just gonna tell you from experience, Luca. I do not believe this won’t be rescinded.” Simply put, if Luka Doncic allegedly bypassed the techs because of Cuban’s secret tricks then maybe Anthony Edwards could also bypass them. “No, but I’ll tell you that. 16, he’s gonna have to, I’m just gonna tell you, he’s gonna have to do some things. You’ve seen it, you’ve seen it, you’ve experienced it. 16’s got a way of getting overruled,” Tim MacMahon added.

However, the recent episode with the Houston Rockets fans could lead to the league penalizing the 23-year-old guard. “Ant’s approaching $300,000 in fines,” Brian Windhorst informed. “You get suspended for a game.” But, even if he gets fined, it will surely burn holes in his wallet. Besides, his $50 million deal with Adidas remains intact, and his NBA salary of $42 million for this season also remains untouched. Thus even without his Anta Claus gig, he’s good to go.
Meanwhile, with Victor Wembanyama gone indefinitely, a major concern lies ahead for Adam Silver and the league. In all honesty, it might be a turning point for Anthony Edwards as he could become the face of the NBA, Even if he says Wemby deserves it more, just like Ramona Shelbourne, no one is willing to believe this is his true desire.
Is it concerning for Adam Silver if Anthony Edwards becomes the face of the NBA?
It is very important here to understand that Anthony Edwards deserves to be the face of the league as much as Wemby deserves it. Not less and not more. However, according to Draymond Green who gave a detailed guideline on how one could take up the crucial role, some things need to be fixed. Now, with Victor Wembanyama sidelined indefinitely with DVT, Antman could be the one for Adam Silver and Co.

“You must represent the league in a positive manner, in a positive light. When you look at the logo, uh, that is what matters most. This is a multi-billion dollar corporation, and how you represent that logo on and off the basketball court matters,” Green told on his podcast. Adapting to the game wouldn’t be enough. The game and the league must also adapt to your rhythm. Just like Stephen Curry and LeBron James have the league revolving around them for decades.

Can Anthony Edwards really be the NBA's face with his mounting fines and controversies?

Most importantly the NBA, and its logo, the brand is bigger than the stars. Rightly so, players come and go, but the NBA stays. So, Edwards must work to uphold a positive image on and off the court. Winning titles also play an important role, but a player’s behavior on and off the court will make a difference. And in this case, Anthony Edwards might be lacking greatly. With a list of fines, penalties, and profanity troubles, he could become Adam Silver‘s concern. Despite ticking all boxes the Minnesota Timberwolves star has a lot to work on.

However, this surely doesn’t mean that Edwards cannot be the face of the NBA. He might be one of the perfect candidates for the role. But he needs to fix some things. And with the $300k mark nearing in terms of fines, Anthony Edwards needs to find ways to bypass techs if he wants to continue in the league without suspensions and more blisters in his wallet.
