Ever since Jimmy Butler demanded a trade from Miami, there have been constant speculations about which team he will join next. The Warriors are among the potential destinations as they have reported interest in the superstar. So, why is Jimmy not wearing a Warriors uniform yet? Well, it might have something to do with Stephen Curry’s stance on the trade. As per veteran insider Kevin O’Connor, “My league sources say Stephen Curry specifically has concerns about Jimmy Butler’s fit in the Warriors locker room.”
And Mike Dunleavy might not make the move without The Baby-Faced Assassin’s consent. Even the team’s former President of Basketball Operations, Bob Myers, revealed the key role Steph usually plays in their trade decisions, “Clearly for me, you’d loop in Steph, you’d loop in the key stakeholders. And then you do what you do. And sometimes, it’s nothing.”
During Myers’ tenure, every major trade was run by Curry before it went through. Of course, Steph has earned that right by giving sixteen years to the franchise and turning them into a dominant dynasty, with four championship wins. And if he believes Butler might not be a good “personality fit” for the Warriors locker room, the front office could shut down their pursuit. Moreover, even Steve Kerr is reportedly in agreement with Steph regarding the Butler concern.

Well, the Bay Area franchise already has a unique personality like Draymond Green, who despite his talent has caused them a lot of problems because of his controversial antics. And Butler is another polarizing personality, who could bring more trouble for the Warriors if he doesn’t fit well in the locker room. Of course, he has a history of bad blood with the Timberwolves and now the Heat. So, it’s understandable why Steph is reluctant about joining forces with him. However, the power to make the final decision still lies with someone else!

While looping Steph in is only one aspect, there are countless other things that need to be considered before making a big trade. Myers spilled the beans on the complexity of the process on The Steiny & Guru Show, “It’s pretty rough. It’s much more than maybe the public realizes.” Yes, the front office has to factor in what the players, head coach, and the owner think. More importantly, knowing what they aim to achieve from a specific trade.
Surprisingly, what the fans will think is also assessed, as Myers remarked, “The power of how a deal is received has probably never been greater.” Even when all those boxes are ticked, a deal can collapse in the final stages if a team backs out or a new update emerges. The former executive deemed the process “exhausting.” However, one person eventually holds the power to make the final decision, “Ultimately, it’s Joe’s team. It’s his call.”

Yes, Joe Lacob can overlook Steph or any other member’s wishes if he wants to, because he is the owner of the franchise. Maybe, he will do it in the Butler situation if he believes adding him would make them immediate title contenders. However, it is unlikely that Lacob would go against Steph’s wish because he is their biggest superstar and it’s important to keep him happy as well.
