Quentin Grimes’ return to Madison Square Garden was bittersweet. While he was received by a heartwarming tribute video before the game, on account of his contribution to the  New York Knicks, in the end, the Detroit Pistons suffered yet another defeat. This time, however, the refs did them dirty. This also marks the third game in which Detroit lost by a margin of three points.

That prevented the ill-fated team from reaching double digits on the win tally for the season. In a post-game interview, the former Knick details his harrowing experience with the refs and shares in detail the disappointment of yet another loss.

Speaking to Kristan Winfeild of Daily News, Grimes alleges,  “I saw it from directly in the view behind us. I saw two guys ran into him, into his legs. Like you said, it was not a guarantee. ‘If [Jalen Brunson] and them was on the other side of that call, they getting that call’.”

He goes on further saying, “But it’s just a respect thing. You gotta earn your way. You gotta earn them stripes. You gotta get to the playoffs, win some games. So stuff like that, where you just gotta earn respect in this league. We’ll get there, for sure.” Grimes’ frustration clearly shows what exactly the consequences are of a missed foul call.

In the end the 23-year-old confessed, “Game goes a totally different way if he gets fouled and we get that call, so that’s just how it is. I kind of seen it being with the team four, five games now. Young team, it’s hard to get calls. You’ve got to get established, so I told the young guys after this game, you’ve got to get respect. I’ve been on the other side of that call many times and not getting that call. We’ve gotta keep fighting, just keep on our way every game, gotta earn respect in this league. Nothing’s handed to you but everyone in here was mad as we should be, but it’s a learning game.”

The Detriot Pistons have a storied history in the NBA. During the “Bad Boy” Era, they won back-to-back, striking fear across conferences. Even until the Early 2000s when they won unexpectedly with Chauncey Billups as their frontman. Lately, they have been in a very bad slump, can they really dig their way out?
