Ex-Cavalier Compares Playing With “Unbelievable” Victor Wembanyama to LeBron James

The NBA world’s long-awaited debut of Victor Wembanyama has finally occurred. Even though the French star put up a decent performance, it did disappoint a majority of fans. The primary reason is the comparison of the rising star with rookie LeBron James. The 2003 #1 draft pick came into the league with a rousing hype and lived up to it in the opening game. On the other end, despite initial highs, Wembanyama couldn’t finish it well. Meanwhile, former Cleveland Cavaliers player drew comparison on playing alongside King James and Wemby after the San Antonio Spurs‘ opening game.

The Spurs took on the Dallas Mavericks on the Day 2 of the 2023-24 regular season. The Mavericks came into the season with fire power for the likes of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Importantly, the sold-out AT&T Center anticipated a perfect debut match for the 7′ 4 baller. Instead, he blew out a 12-point lead and lost 126-119 on Wednesday night.

The only similarity between LeBron James and Victor Wembanyama is both 19-year-olds entered the league with heights of expectations. James played his debut game against the Sacramento Kings and scored 25 points. Despite the team’s loss, he impressed fans with his outing. Whereas on the other end, Wemby dropped only 15-points and failed to score any points in the crucial last two minutes of the game. Amid the rousing criticisms on him, the star’s new teammate, Cedi Osman, who previously played alongside James in 2017-18 season, backed Wemby.

In a recent interview before the opening game with Andscape.com, Osman praised King James. He said, “Obviously, I played with LeBron. LeBron is in a different spot for me.” But he had more to tell about the French baller. He continued, “Wemby’s unbelievable. He’s really unbelievable and you can see how he just impresses everybody and people are trying to shoot over him.” 

Moreover, he also expects the star to grow further in the coming years. He added, “He obviously has a bright future.”

Interestingly, Wemby’s debut game stats astonishingly matched Duncan’s debut game. The 5x NBA Champion played against the Denver Nuggets and scored the same 15 points in his debut game.
