The Cleveland Cavaliers won the battle of the giants against the Boston Celtics last night. However, during their triumph, they faced a setback as Evan Mobley, during the third quarter, went down with an ankle injury. Mobley sustained the injury dramatically after dunking the ball mid-way to the stretch, forcing the Cavs to foul and stop the game momentarily.
Enduring the pain, Mobley had to be assisted back to the locker room, forcing the big man to rely on crutches while leaving the arena later on. Now, after the initial prognosis of extended absence, Mobley underwent an MRI, confirming the strain on his left ankle. With that, further updates on his availability will come after one week, when he is slated to be re-evaluated.

Mobley’s absence brings in a tough week for the Cavaliers. It paints a void of an asserting big man in the paint and extends their list of injured players on the roster. Along with Mobley, the Cavs are currently without Donovan Mitchell and Max Strus, tending to their knee issues. Furthermore, Mitchell will be away from the court until their March 8 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. With that, and considering the major update on Mobley, it will not be a surprise if Strus continues to stay away from the game.

Can the Cavs hold their own without Evan Mobley, Mitchell, and Strus?
In their surprise triumph over the top-seeded Boston, the Cavs played without the two backcourt players. One who kept them in the playoff picture earlier in the season and other who mounted the second-longest game-winner in NBA history while hosting Kyrie Irving.
However, their win against the C’s came within a single point. Regardless, the matchup underlines the Cavalier’s strong foundations and hunger this season. The Celtics dominated the majority of the game, opening the fourth with a 22-point difference.

However, the team united to mount a 34-point stretch, maintaining the Celtics’ offense at their half – just 17 points. The Celtics went cold, and part of that had to do with heightened intensity on the perimeter by the hosts. Moreover, as the Celtics struggled with their shooting touch, the Cavaliers brought the fight to the three-point line. Moreover, in a sight reminiscent of their heroics against the Dallas Mavericks, they managed to put the ball in Dean Wade’s red-hot hands, allowing him to make 5 threes in his 20-point fourth quarter.
With that, despite missing key players from their rotation, can the Cavaliers sustain their high seed in the Eastern Conference in the upcoming games?
