JJ Redick is all set to cover the NBA Finals between Boston and Dallas, as a part of ESPN’s lead broadcasting booth along with Doris Burke, Mike Breen, and Lisa Salters. Now that we have confirmation on what he is doing for the next few days, everyone awaits to see what he will do after. Yes, we are talking about his future as the possible head coach for the Lakers. The Athletic‘s Shams Charania did have some insider information on how the LA side is currently “zeroing in” on him. However, Redick has never spoken up about it. But suddenly, on GoJo and Golic’s new episode on the DraftKings network, we might have gotten our confirmation from the root!

Redick was clever enough with his hints without sparing too much. “My focus right now is on calling the NBA Finals”, he said. But then went ahead to address Charania’s news, making the rounds on the internet. In a semi-acknowledging manner, he said, “In terms of Shams, that will be addressed when the season is over. So I’ll just say that”. Amid all the chaos, there’s one important thing to note here- Redick was the only candidate who went in for a face-to-face interview with the Lakers’ front office recently.

But he won’t spill the beans, because he is sharp enough to understand that he would not want to take the spotlight away from the NBA Finals. So, any confirmation we get from either him or any other NBA insider will be after the season is over. But then, this charade did not stop there. His NBA Finals presenting partner and vet sports commentator, Mike Breen, came in with his views on the Dan LeBatard Show.

Mike Breen spills the beans on JJ Redick as the future Lakers HC

After working closely with him for many days, Breen is sure that Redick will make a wonderful coach. At first, he humorously pointed out he has his own coaching tree now, after seeing so many names in the hat for the position. Later, he goes on to speak words of praise. Breen says, “His knowledge of the game is scary. And you can tell when he talks to coaches how they’ll respond”.

“When he talks to players, how they’ll respond. And you add that to his love for the game. And I’ve always heard, from anywhere he has played, he was a great teammate. He understands all that. You never know till a guy’s in the position, but I think he has all the characteristics to be a great head coach,” he said.

We understand the praise coming in for Redick. It seems plausible right now. But we also have to understand that when and if Redick enters the coaching field, he isn’t experienced. He might be a wrong choice for not just the lack of his coaching experience, but also for the fact that he has never held the Larry O’Brien trophy in his hand, ever.

It is not just Mike Breen, Shams Charania also feels that JJ Redick has the potential to lead the team in the long run. He can command the locker room and hold everybody accountable. Added to this, with his basketball IQ, which we all are now familiar with, through his podcasts, he can easily build a robust game plan for the Lakers. He can be the foundational structure they need right now.

So, what do you think? Will he make it as LeBron James’ head coach, and will they together realize the dream of winning the Finals next year? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
