The Mavericks’ trade decision shook the whole trade window. While the last 48 hours had the two of the biggest trades of recent times, with less than 72 hours remaining in the trade window and the insiders on high alert. So much so, the top news breaker in the biz, Shams Charania, had to ditch his prior commitment to something big.

During his appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, the ESPN insider abruptly stopped the host in his track. He followed it up by saying “I got to go.. I got to go guys”, bringing a cheer out of the crew. The host was left in shock, but there was something that just couldn’t wait. Well, a trade news was lined up for Shams to break, and he did so minutes later. According to him, “The Philadelphia 76ers are trading Caleb Martin to the Dallas Mavericks.” The player who was sacrificed from the Mavs squad was Quentin Grimes. And the pattern was similar to Doncic’s.

Grimes had no idea about the sudden change of plans. He was with the team, joking around during the shootaround at the Wells Fargo Center, and within an hour, it was all over for him. In his 47 appearances, Grimes added 10.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists. He had just joined the franchise, and within a few months, the Mavericks decided to part ways with him. Along with him, the organization sent their 2025 second-round pick for 29-year-old Martin.

The life of an insider is never easy, and Shams Charania’s rush showed just that especially during the trade window when franchises are making big moves, like the Luka Doncic trade, which created waves across the league especially among fans in Dallas.

Mavericks’ one move caused their fans to turn against them

What’s your perspective on:

Is trading for Caleb Martin a stroke of genius or a desperate move by the Mavericks?

Have an interesting take?

On one hand, LA has been energized by the arrival of the Slovenian star, hoping to transform their barren land into gold mines. On the other hand, Dallas is mourning the loss of their superstar. Doncic’s move pushed the Mavericks own fanbase to turn against them.

There were fan protests near the American Airlines Center, with placards displaying their strong opposition to the trade. But that wasn’t all. Some fans brought a coffin, expressing their emotions and paying tribute in their own way. And those who couldn’t take to the streets showed their silent protests by unfollowing the team’s Instagram page, costing the Mavericks over 700K followers overnight.

This was bound to happen. Luka Doncic was the team’s star who had taken the Mavericks to new heights, and removing him at his peak form deeply offended the fans, leading them to react the way they did. In fact, it’s possible that the impact could be seen in the team’s revenue, as many fans might now choose not to attend games. How things will unfold from here on remains to be seen in the coming days.
