LeBron James is box office. The statement is true even in year 22 of the 40-year-old. There’s a reason why the Lakers are the most featured team on national TV year in and year out and King James has been a major needle mover in it. 8.45 Million NBA fans tuned in to watch LeBron James vs Stephen Curry’s Christmas Day battle. That’s the most in the last five years and the most since 2022. The previous holders of the record were also that same man and his team. ESPN numerically was in every right to push off other games from prime-time TV to feature the first-ever game of LeBron James and Luka Doncic together. But now it has come back to bite them after some major developments in the last few hours.
Earlier today, the Lakers announced LeBron James would be out of the Pacers game at Crypto.com Arena. The left ankle that has been bothering him for the past few years picked its moment to sour the mood. The Lakers star will miss the game due to a soreness issue it. His new partner in crime, Luka Doncic, is also out due to his calf issue despite participating in 5v5 and shooting drills. This now leaves ESPN embarrassed as they already pushed out the Suns vs Jazz game that was scheduled to be televised before the biggest trade in the league’s history.
After pushing Suns vs. Jazz off ESPN last night in favor of Lakers vs. Pacers, neither Luka Doncic or LeBron James will play today.

This decision will certainly impact the viewership. And the media outlet will have to bear the loss. A matchup featuring LeBron and Doncic would have been unmatched but looks like fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the highly anticipated duo on the hardwood.
But age is becoming a factor for the 4-time champion, and it’s important to acknowledge that his body needs rest. While it’s tough for fans to accept, it’s something LeBron doesn’t shy away from.

LeBron James talks about “old” age after big night
Looking at LeBron James playing at 40, you’d never guess he’s “old.” Especially after his historic performance on Thursday against the Warriors, where he dropped 42 points, becoming the oldest player to do so since Michael Jordan. Besides that, he also grabbed 17 rebounds and helped with 8 assists, showcasing an unmatched dominance on the floor.
However, later that night he made the confession. “What do I think? That I’m old,” LeBron told the media following their 120-112 victory. “That’s what I think. I need a glass of wine and some sleep; that’s the first thing I think about.”

LeBron also hinted earlier that he doesn’t have much time left in his tank and doesn’t want the wheels to fall off before announcing it. But the harsh reality will eventually come. However, with the way he’s performing, averaging 24.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 9 assists per night, that day certainly isn’t coming anytime soon. For now, sit back and relax because there’s still plenty more of the LeBron James show to enjoy.
