We all know that Stephen Curry is special. But did we know that he was born special? Gilbert Arenas can say all he wants about Steph not being a “generational talent” and that being generational is something you are born with. But all the signs were there. And if Curry’s mom, Sonya Curry, wasn’t trying to handle her first delivery all by herself, she would have noticed it sooner rather than later.
The Summa Akron City Hospital’s fate turned overnight. Well, the entire city’s destiny itself changed thanks to LeBron James. However, this particular hospital witnessed the birth of two of the greatest living legends of the NBA! Bron and Steph were born in the Most Valuable Basketball Maternity Ward 38 months and 1 week apart. Although, it wasn’t exactly the best experience for the mother of three.
Sonya and Dell moved into the Timber Top Apartments Complex on Akron’s north side because the former Virginia Tech product was traded to the Cavs after one season in Utah. The couple were expecting their first child in late March. Considering Sonya’s due date was still quite a bit away, her husband felt it was okay to accept a 3-game road trip.

Only baby Curry decided he had enough of staying inside.
Earth, Wind, and Fire … and the birth of a star
Sonya Curry was apparently a huge fan of the American band, Earth, Wind, and Fire. Known for their kalimba sound, dynamic horn section, and elaborate stage shows, they are one of the best-selling bands of all time. Either way, she must have been a devoted fan, considering Sonya decided to attend their concert in New York with around three weeks left in the pregnancy.

“I get home and the next morning, I’m like, ‘something doesn’t sit right.’ The only person around was Brad Daugherty’s girlfriend at the time. So, she had to take me to the hospital,” the 58-year-old recalls. If only that was the end of it. Obviously, Dell wasn’t around, nor could they get through to him. In those days, fans could simply show up at the hotel where these players were staying and simply ask to patch through to their rooms. So, more often than not, they set it to ‘Do Not Disturb’.
“This is my first child. I don’t know what’s going on. She puts me in this big old, huge, monster truck,” Sonya says, laughing at the recollection. Trying her level best to keep the pain at bay, the first-time mother patiently answers the hospital staff’s questions. But when they heard her name, Sonya Adams, the two women were in for a shock.
“Ma’am, you’re at the wrong hospital. You need to go to the other hospital,” Sonya remembered the staff saying. Between trying to find what went wrong and trying to keep the baby in, Steph’s mother was at a loss. But help was at hand. A policeman happened to be standing at the lobby who offered to escort Sonya to the other hospital. The ex-Mrs. Curry couldn’t help laughing, thinking of the incidents.
“Now when I look back, I’m like, ‘the dude gets a police escort to the hospital.’ … It’s hard for me to tell that story a lot of times because I go back there and I often tell him, it was just me and him when he came into this world. So, you know, we have a special bond.“
What can we say? What more do we have to say? Stephen Curry was born for success. It’s as simple as that.
