Do you know Erik Spoelstra’s father played a role in the NBA before him? Jon was a former sports marketer and executive in the NBA for 4 teams- Buffalo Braves, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, and New Jersey Nets. But this wasn’t it. He also served as Nets president and was the reason for their increased home attendance!
One of his famous marketing stunts involved mailing rubber chickens to season ticket holders who hadn’t renewed for the upcoming season in 1994. Attached was a message, “Don’t Fowl Out!” How did this quirky campaign influence ticket sales? It became a memorable and effective strategy, driving renewals.
Despite having so much success and having been working in the NBA for decades, Jon never pushed Erik to join the league. “I never tried to steer him into any industry. There was no ulterior motive. I would think if I was a plumber, I’d have my little boy following me around and I’d show him what a wrench does,” he once said. Although he had a famous dad, nothing is known about his mother.
That said, it was his sister Monica Spoelstra who pushed him to be in the NBA. Back in 1995, when the hooper was on the verge of choosing between playing professionally in Germany or becoming a video coordinator for the Heat, she was the one who helped him make a decision.

The once-underdog coach of the Miami Heat now receives hero’s treatment wherever he goes! He once recalled a day when the crowd went mad, that not even the security around him could control! “We are doing a clinic with kids and then, as soon as we were done with the clinic, they just swarmed us. And they just wanted pictures, selfies, and autographs from everybody on the staff. And it got to the point where Fiz and another assistant, Chad Kammerer, were signing kid’s forehead.” He said.
His dedication to growing the game in the Philippines is clear. Over the years, he has led countless basketball clinics for local players, often, under challenging conditions. No air conditioning, overcrowded gyms, or lack of equipment has ever stopped him from sharing his knowledge.
