San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama continues to defy expectations day by day. Despite the ongoing NBA season being his very first, the player has succeeded in establishing records that not even the veterans amongst him have managed to reach. His performance continues to improve as the playoffs come closer, as evident from his recent clash against the Brooklyn Nets.
The recent matchup at the Moody Center saw the Spurs defeat their rivals by a score of 122-115. Despite a reasonable offensive effort by Cam Thomas and Dennis Schröder, the Nets ended up being no match for Wembanyama, who contributed a whopping 33 points to his team’s overall score. Along with that, he added 7 additional blocks to his overall stat. While it may not be the highest that the player has scored in a single game, it brought him closer to setting a record. According to a recent X update by StatMamba, with his 207 career blocks, “Victor Wembanyama already has more career blocks than 81.4% of all active NBA players.” The recent game also saw the French player join David Robinson as the only other rookie in the league’s history to accumulate 30+ points, 15+ rebounds, 5+ blocks and 5+ assists during a single game.

The record for the most career blocks by an active NBA player is currently held by Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez. With over 1,888 career blocks to his name, the player has devoted over 16 years of his life to the league in order to accumulate this score. During his rookie season, Lopez had only manged to accumulate 151 blocks, while the 2022-23 season saw him recording his highest blocks in a single season: 193. Victor Wembanyama has surpassed Lopez’s rookie record as well as his highest seasonal record. Therefore, if he continues at his current pace, there is a high chance that it won’t take him long to cross the 1,888 threshold as well.

Along with his huge list of records, Victor Wembanyama has managed to pull off an impressive average of 20.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists during the ongoing NBA season. His average has only improved during the past 10 games, going up to 22.5 points, 11.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists. While the Spurs may be listed as the very last seed on the Western Conference points table, their bad performance can in no way be attributed to the 19-year-old rookie.
One of Wemby’s speciality has been his free throw percentage, which currently stands at a season average of 80.3%. The same, however, has reduced during the past 10 games to 78%. On the other hand, there was been a rise in his number of blocks. While his seasonal average is listed as 3.5, the same has risen to 4.6 over the last 10 games.
The Spurs fans may not carry any expectations for a championship title. However, this would not stop them from experiencing a young prodigy in the making and looking forward to what he might achieve next.
