Can Andreas Obst outshine Team USA and prove he's the real 'German Steph Curry'?

Those who watched Team USA’s nervy game against Germany are already aware of the threat Andreas Obst possesses. The sharpshooter is not only proficient but also dubbed the “German Steph Curry”. But is his moniker solely due to his 3-point shooting prowess? No. Additionally, Obst is a Curry fanboy who is eagerly anticipating the prospect of going up against his idol in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Andreas Obst and Steph Curry already had an encounter during Team USA’s exhibition game against Germany in London last week. Apart from meeting his idol, Obst outscored Curry during that game by 4 points and is looking forward to another opportunity to play against him for a very special desire. “I wanted to let him know that he’s my GOAT. He’s really the GOAT. He’s the best shooter of all time. He was like a role model to me,” Obst told BasketNews in a recent interview. “I’ve been watching him since I really wanted to shoot the ball. I really wanted to say I appreciated and enjoyed playing against him. I also asked if it’s possible to exchange jerseys or something. But we’ll manage [to do it] somehow,” the Bayern Munich guard revealed.

During their showdown at O2 Arena, Team USA did outlast Germany thanks to a late LeBron James flurry but Obst impressed the fans with his shooting prowess. Obst scored 17 points from 6-13 shooting with 5 successful 3-point attempts out of 11. Curry on the other hand finished the game 13 in a night of personal struggles. The Dubs ace only sank one of his 7 attempts from deep.

Germany opened its account at the Paris Olympics with a win against Japan. The group B game finished 97-77 in favor of Obst and Co. In the 18 minutes, Obst could only score 3 points from 50% shooting. It was a bad day in the office personally, but he already made his mark on Steph Curry during their first meeting on the global stage.

Steph Curry praised Andreas Obst’s shooting game

After the game between Germany and Team USA, the obvious question Steph Curry faced was about Obst. His German counter part did numbers on him and Team USA despite the late escape and Curry identified it. “It’s pretty awesome to know the comparison: guys who have modelled a little bit of their game after me,” Curry said. “He’s a great shooter. I saw it last year, I saw it tonight. He requires your attention, at all times”

Amidst his uninspiring form, demand for Steph Curry to come off the bench has amplified but Steve Kerr will possibly have the core team intact with LeBron, and Steph in the starting 5. USA will begin their Olympics journey on July 28 against Serbia and with Germany already getting a headstart, a win can be the only target for Steph Curry to point at.
