“We should bring back fighting.” Joe Mazzulla shocked the world when he advocated for physical combat in NBA games. This idea stems from ice hockey, where they often go all-out fight mode when things get heated. But throwing hands in the NBA means ejections, hefty fines, and suspensions. No one understands the consequences better than Draymond Green, who finds himself in trouble almost every season. But despite Joe favoring physicality, Green was not a big fan of his idea and was prepared to dispute him.
In conversation with Baron Davis, Green initially understood the Celtics coach’s sentiment, “I get what Joe is trying to get at and more so what he’s saying is the intensity and the s— talking, guys getting testy, we take so much of that out of the game today.”
However, the Warriors floor general straight-up disagreed with the idea of fighting, “But like actual physical fights, Joe, I’m here to petition against you because no, we’re not doing that. Where that almost led me, my man, I don’t want none of that. I’m cool.”

Sure enough, Draymond has lost nearly $3.2 million because of suspensions and has paid $900,000 in fines in his career. But more importantly, the frequent physical altercations have tarnished his reputation in the hoops community. Just last season, there was constant drama surrounding him as he got suspended twice, first for putting Rudy Gobert in a headlock, and later for hitting Jusuf Nurkic in the face.
Not only did it have people doubting his credibility as a professional athlete, but fans also began questioning his parenting skills and behavior at home. So, it’s quite understandable why the Warriors veteran wanted no part in Joe Mazzulla’s ‘passionate’ idea, as he remarked on The Draymond Green Show, “One thing I would say to Joe Mazzulla is fighting how you out of this league bro.”

Draymond Green considered retirement after major accusations, but Adam Silver stopped him
During last season’s suspensions, Draymond Green went through a lot of emotional turmoil. Apart from getting constantly bombarded by the media, some fans even put major allegations on him “You hitting your wife. That’s nuts!” The Warrior even revealed on Carmelo Anthony’s podcast that his children were getting picked on in school because of the drama. Sure enough, this led to the veteran hooper considering retirement as he told Adam Silver, “I am done with this s—.”
However, the NBA Commissioner understood the situation and told Draymond Green, “You sound like you need time.” And instead of quitting the game, Adam Silver advised him to take some time off and deal with all the issues. As expected, the mature approach helped the former DPOY rethink his decision and continue playing. Moreover, he even gained a lot of respect for Silver.

While Joe Mazzulla likely wants to bring back fighting for entertainment purposes, hoping to increase the intensity of the Celtics’ games, Draymond is unlikely to promote this idea after all he has gone through. “Imma leave that to Joe. Joe, you go fight,” he added.
