Is Draymond Green the real problem in the Warriors' locker room, or is there more to the story?

The Golden State Warriors dynasty never seemed to be satisfied with their overwhelming star power. There was always a desire for more. That’s why in 2019, Bob Myers added one of the elite centers, DeMarcus Cousins to the two-time champions’ roster. Draymond Green remembers being on vacation in Greece when hearing about the news. “If you can get DeMarcus Cousins, you f**king get DeMarcus Cousins” he recalls telling the former GM. But at times transitions don’t go smoothly.

Such was the case for Boogie. When Cousins came to the Warriors, he was rehabbing from an ACL injury. The understanding was that he wouldn’t be the ferocious and merciless version of himself. Even then, he had the ability to help the team win. However, no one said the process would be easy. And Cousins soon found out.

“I would say it was a hurdle I had to jump over. And you know, it was a lot for me even, coming back, learning the system, you know. And it’s like, in that office, people think it’s just so free-flowing, but it takes a lot of IQ to play in that office, and your IQ never turns off,” he said on The Draymond Green Show.

“So it was a lot of difficult times where sometimes I felt out of place, the rhythm was off, trying to figure out my own personal game within the offense. So it was a lot of things against me, and then on top of that just having confidence in my movements, doing things that I was used to doing. But my mind is telling me, like, yeah, you can still do it, but my body not on the same page,” he told his former teammate.

Draymond Green didn’t have much to say. Maybe it was because eventually, Cousins did find his role. He only played in 30 games that season but was an integral component coming off the bench. His 16 points per game helped the Bay stay on the trajectory to achieve a three-peat. But again, the fate of injuries derailed Cousins, taking him out. Durant too suffered an injury, and the Warriors would lose in the NBA Finals.

Is Draymond Green the real problem in the Warriors' locker room, or is there more to the story?

It would also be the one-and-done season for Boogie with the Dubs.

DeMarcus Cousins is content with not returning to the NBA

After his short stint with the Golden State Warriors, DeMarcus Cousins bounced around the league. He last appeared with the Denver Nuggets during the 2022 season. Following that year, as his attempts to re-enter the league failed, Cousins decided to move overseas. In his landmark achievement, he won Finals MVP for the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League Finals. It seems to be the perfect trampoline to jump back into the NBA. However, the 34-year-old has shut the doors on any possible return.

I know I’ve had my time there. You know, there was a point where I was trying to make that happen. But the place I’m in my life now, just with everything I’ve got going on, just outside of basketball, like I’m in a good place. So, like I said, I’m excited for what I have ahead and my future,” he said in an interview with HoopsHype in February.

It’s not to say that he can’t, but Cousins has found solace in the 12 years he played in the NBA. For most of those years, he was regarded as an imposing center equipped with modern-day traits. Now, he has found his comfort zone, playing overseas and enjoying playing at a high level once again. So even though fans might want him to make a return, Boogie simply doesn’t wish for it anymore.
