Is Hazel Renee the unsung hero behind Draymond Green's success on and off the court?

Having met in theatre class, Draymond Green knew the potential that his wife, Hazel Renee, held. Therefore, when her film came out 12 years after their first meeting, the Golden State Warriors star didn’t hold back in sending his ultimate praise, reminding fans of the bond that the couple has created over the last couple of years. “I’ve seen the countless amount of hours studying, auditioning, self-taping classes and No’s. The Yes’s start to roll in. Keep going my love,” Green stated.

This bond is what has enabled them to be together for years and serve as parents to four children, even though two of them comefrom the couple’s previous relationships. With this in mind, let us explore more about the Defensive star’s loved ones.

Who is Hazel Renee?

Born in Michigan back in 1986, Hazel Renee shares a mixed heritage, with her mother, Eve Reichardt being mixed Filipino and Puerto Rican. At the same time, her father, Rodney Joiner, has African-American roots. She didn’t go too far from home for her education, getting herself enrolled in the Central High School, and then Michigan State University for her higher education. Renee herself held an affinity for sports, which allowed her to be a member of the college’s track and field team.

As it turned out, it may have been fate that took her there, as Michigan State was also the place to which Draymond Green devoted four years of his college career to. However, it was neither the basketball court nor the running ground, where the future Mrs Green would get deeply acquainted with the future Warriors star. In an August 2022 interview with Essence, she revealed, “We were in the same theater class and both athletes. Naturally we gravitated towards one another for group projects because we were already familiar with each other.”

Despite having formed a bond in college, Draymond Green and Hazel Renee wouldn’t go on to date until later on. While the 10.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists he averaged at Michigan allowed Green to be selected during the 2012 NBA Draft, Renee attempted to lay a foundation for a successful acting career. She gained some recognition for appearing in two episodes of Fox’s ‘Empire’ back in 2017. Before that, she appeared in a short film titled ‘12 Days of Christmas’, and two episodes of the series ‘The Marriage Tour.’

Green and Renee would meet again a couple of years after their college ended. While the exact year is unknown, we do know that the Defensive Player of the Year had denied rumors of their relationship in 2017 before confirming it later in May 2018. The year after that, Green and Renee announced their engagement! However, they wouldn’t marry until August 2022, delaying their original June 2020 date due to the Covid Pandemic. This didn’t make the occasion any less special.

The couple would commit to their vows in a “Golden San Diego Ceremony”, with guests like LeBron James and Savannah, Shaquille O’Neal’s ex-wife, Kentavious and McKenzie Caldwell-Pope, and several members of the Curry clan being present to wish them well.

Is Hazel Renee the unsung hero behind Draymond Green's success on and off the court?

Have an interesting take?

Two years on, the relationship that had probably been in the making since 2012 continues to blossom.

How old are Draymond Green’s four children?

Green’s reluctance to not get into a relationship with Renee may have been due to the fact that the player was already in a relationship during his college days! In fact, he and Jelissa Hardy, who also attended Michigan State University, had been together since 2007. This relationship would go on for a decade, with Draymond’s first child being born through Hardy back in December 2016. Taking to Instagram, he announced the birth of his boy by writing “I never experienced such a feeling like I did when I watched his (Draymond Jr.) entry.” Reports would later state the separation between the couple as a ‘misunderstanding.’ Despite this, the power forward continues to remain close with his eldest even today.

At 7 years of age, Draymond Jamal Green Jr. has often been seen at his father’s side during NBA games. Green himself reportedly admitted that ‘DJ’ walks around the Warriors clubhouse as if he owns it. Fortunately, his lovable personality made every staff member and employee in awe of him. In an E! News interview, Draymond admitted how, when his son was five, he boldly admitted “All right, Daddy, I’m going to rebound for Steph (Curry).”

Hazel Reene herself pursued a serious relationship with Crotian and Spanish League champion Jacob Pullen. The couple together had a daughter, Olive, who would then spend the majority of her time with her mother after the duo’s separation. Looking at how an Instagram post from 2019 celebrated her fifth birthday, we can assume that Olive is at least 10 years old today.

When Reene and Draymond Green started dating, the latter became a father figure to Olive. He celebrated her fifth birthday on Instagram by calling her his “little braveheart” and even acknowledged Jacob Pullen in the post.

While they couldn’t get married in 2020, Draymond and Reene did have a daughter together, who was finally born in October of that year, named Cash. A video shared by Renee showed how both Draymond Jr. and Olive waited by the door to greet the newborn and gave her kisses on the forehead. Just like Riley Curry, Cash would have her own viral moment when she approached her father during a presser to complain that “Draymond (Jr) hit me with the ball.”

All three children were a big part of the wedding ceremony when the couple finally tied the knot. Being almost 4, Cash didn’t end up being the youngest for long, as Renee would give birth to another daughter in late 2023. While she has appeared in several of her mother’s social media posts, her name is yet to revealed.

Draymond Green named his children as a motivating factor behind how he has been performing over the last few years. After all, since they are growing up and starting to get a better understanding of the sport, he revealed to NBC Sports, “I want to show them what I’m actually capable of. They are a ton of motivation.”

Even his wife has continued to support him throughout the seasons. With the Warriors off to a good start during the pre-season, it remains to be seen whether the player will be able to bring another Larry O’Brien trophy home to motivate his children even further!
