Well, there is no denying the fact that Boston is a sports town. Home to some of the most historic franchises across multiple sports, it is the place to be for every passionate fan. And by adding a record 18 title to their resume in June, the Celtics might very well have become the ‘Kings of Boston’. While the future seems bright because of their star-studded roster, the Celtics’ recent ownership struggles, and the meteoric rise of Patriots rookie Drake Maye could threaten their crown.
While the Celtics fans were busy enjoying their recent championship win, owner Wyc Grousbeck revealed his intentions of selling the franchise in the coming months at a valuation of nearly $6 billion. Making the idea official, the Celtics soon released a statement, “The managing board of the ownership group expects to sell a majority interest in 2024 or early 2025, with the balance closing in 2028, and expects Wyc Grousbeck to remain as the Governor of the team until the second closing in 2028.” Discussing the franchise’s future on the Celtics Beat podcast, media veteran Evan Valenti asked co-host Chad Finn how long the Celtics can hold on to their crown amid the ownership uncertainty.
“I’m a little skeptical that they’re gonna be able to keep this $900 million roster together for the long term once those penalties start to hit after next season with team being for sale.” Finn replied. While the Celtics roster has the talent to become a dynasty and win multiple titles in the future, keeping stars like Tatum, Brown, Holiday, and Porzingis teamed up will take a major financial toll on the franchise. And with new ownership coming in, there could be some major changes in the roster to avoid second apron penalties. “For the short term, that is next season and maybe the season after and then we will see beyond that, they’re loaded.” Finn added.

Drake Maye and the Patriots are coming for the Celtics’ crown
Although the media veterans believe the Celtics will keep wearing the crown at least for the next couple of seasons, there might be a major threat looming. “The only thing that’s gonna derail this team from being the talk of the town for a decade is Drake Maye possibly being just the next best guy, but you know I think we got a little while.” Valenti remarked. Yes, it has been only a few months since the Patriots selected North Carolina star Drake Maye as the third pick in this year’s draft. And he has already turned into a household name in Boston.
There is still some time left for the NFL season to begin. But Drake has been doing wonders in the preseason games so far. After an impressive performance in the second game against the Eagles, the 21-year-old even got the adulation of his head coach Jerod Mayo, “One of the reasons we drafted Drake was, you know, through the interview process you could kind of tell this was an even-keeled guy. I think you guys can probably see it from the stands.”

Continuing the praise, Mayo added, “This guy doesn’t get too high, doesn’t get too low. He was like that in college, he probably was like that as a kid, and he remains that way now, which is a good thing for a quarterback.” Moreover, if he continues to grow at this pace, he could soon become the next big thing in Boston.
