Fans are still waiting for the Los Angeles Lakers to make a comeback. All hope is not lost as they sit in 9th position in the Western Conference with a 24-25 record. This is a team that lifted the inaugural IST trophy not so long ago. Apart from this achievement, we have not felt much of the Lakers’ dominance this season. Under these circumstances, the best option for the franchise is to make some major roster changes.

And this is exactly the direction they are going in, trying to close in on a big steal before the trade deadline. The notion is that they were locked in on Atlanta Hawks PG Dejounte Murray, but if this doesn’t pull through, they already have backup plans. Playing it safe, the Purple and Gold have their eyes set on three players from the Brooklyn Nets.

As per NBA insider Shams Charania, in an attempt to pull themselves up, the Lakers continue to keep Dejounte as their first option, but the team has recently shown interest in other places. This includes the Nets’ PG Spencer Dinwiddie, and PFs Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O’Neale. “Another scenario to keep an eye on, players that the Lakers do have interest in I’m told, is three guys from the Nets are Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, Royce O’Neale,” he says.

As Charania puts it, “The Lakers have been consistently inconsistent,” and there still seem to be cracks in the locker room. This means that the disconnect that existed between Coach Darvin Ham and the players is still lurking. Moreover, amidst the team’s current deplorable state, the “lineup discourse” continues to be an issue. So, it is unsurprising to see that they are now looking outwards to alleviate their woes. Among the three names that are on the radar, Dinwiddie stands out as the most likely one to be traded.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Dinwiddie is potentially the player that could land in LA. “With an expiring $20.3 million deal, Dinwiddie is the likely fulcrum in any big move before the deadline,” Brian writes. He also pointed out that the Lakers’ D’Angelo Russell has been considered as the potential trade partner for the Nets in exchange for Dinwiddie.

This is, of course, if the Lakers are unable to secure Dejounte. Considering that they haven’t talked much about the Dejounte trade with the Hawks as of late, that hope is dwindling. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise if the Lakers end up with Dinwiddie, in which case, they would want the Hawks to throw in Finney-Smith and O’Neale by letting go of another asset or two.
