The Cleveland Cavaliers have become one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference over the past couple of seasons. The Cavs’ front office has carefully crafted a formidable roster, capable of beating any given opponent in the NBA. Despite the all-around talent on the Cavs roster, 27-year-old Donovan Mitchell remains the crown jewel. Mitchell has guided the Cavs to their first postseason appearance since LeBron’s departure, and they are now on the brink of securing another playoff berth.
While Donovan Mitchell has done a commendable job leading Cleveland, there has been a persistent shadow cast by his impending free agency in 2025. However, Cavs’ owner Dan Gilbert alleviated such fears in an interview by stating, “We think he’ll extend.” When reporters quizzed Mitchell about Gilbert’s remarks following the Cavs’ crucial 117-114 win over the Philadelphia 76ers, he had this to say, “Too early…I’ll handle that when it comes to…I understand you gotta ask…We’re going out there trying to find ways to win a championship.”

Donovan Mitchell‘s refusal to commit to a long-term contract has further heightened speculation about his future. With the 2023-24 season at such a crucial juncture, this isn’t an ideal situation for the Cleveland Cavaliers and even Mitchell. Having said that, Mitchell has continued to perform impressively for Cleveland, averaging 27.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.3 rebounds in 50 games this season. Furthermore, Mitchell’s remarkable displays have had a positive effect on the Cavs’ current position. They currently occupy the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference with less than 9 regular season games remaining, with 45 wins from 74 matches.
What could the future hold for Donovan Mitchell?
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future in Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell has remained professional and has forced a trade. Before being traded to the Cavaliers, Mitchell was linked heavily with the New York Knicks. However, the deal never materialized. Despite balling out for the Cavs, speculation continues to link Mitchell with both the Knicks and the Miami Heat.

However, the Cleveland Cavaliers possess the ability to hand out the most lucrative contract. Donovan Mitchell, who could hit free agency as soon as 2025, is eligible for a three-year contract extension worth $149 million right now. But if he waits until the 2025 offseason, Mitchell would be eligible for a five-year contract worth $260 million. It remains to be seen what Mitchell decides for his future, but one thing is clear: the outcome of the 2024 playoffs will significantly influence his decision. What are your thoughts?
