Everything that Donovan Mitchell & Co. touches has turned gold this season! Last night, taking on the Hornets, it almost felt like the Cavaliers would fall short until they survived with a 1-point victory. That has been their story this season. The story of never missing the mark. Now that the season slowly moves to the business end, the narratives creep in. Does their backcourt duo have enough muscle to carry the team? Will they carry the same momentum into playoffs? Spida Mitchell answered everything.
The Cavaliers don’t really have to worry about the regular season anymore. They became the first team to qualify for the playoffs this season. From the media’s perspective, there isn’t much to speak about the fully healthy roster until the post-season begins. So, it was the time to beat around the bush and bring in the old narrative, the infamous backcourt duo debate.
Ahead of this season, there was a lot of debate surrounding the compatibility of Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland. Mind you, there were serious off-season talks about splitting them up. Fortunately, the duo trusted the team, and new coach Kenny Atkinson kept them in the hunt. Guess what? They went on to become the best backcourt duo in the franchise’s history. They created history by becoming the first Cavs’ duo to score 29+ points, 5 rbs, 5 asts, and 4 3-points each in a single game.

After last night’s victory, a reporter asked if they were the best duo in NBA history. He said, “I don’t know on the spot. That’s tough.” Then he was asked to name the better duo than them. That’s when he made his stance clear, saying, ” I’m never going to put anybody ahead of us.”
“I don’t know on the spot, that’s tough…there’s a backcourt of Kyrie Irving and James Harden that existed. There’s a backcourt of Kyrie and Luka that existed…I’m not ever gonna put anybody ahead of us.”

Nevertheless, Mitchell still went on to list a few duos, saying, “There’s a backcourt of Kyrie Irving and James Harden that existed. There’s a backcourt of Kyrie and Luka that existed. Who else?” But he was clever not to give that space for any existing duos. While he expressed his confidence in his partnership with Garland, he also had an important message to the NBA world and his locker room.

Anyway, the star guard handled the question without any ego and said, “We have the utmost confidence.“ Moreover, Mitchell went on to highlight the difference he managed to bring into the side, saying, “When I first got here, half of our roster hadn’t been to the playoffs.” Since his arrival in the 2022-23 season, the Cavs managed to qualify for the post-season two times. Amid the injury woes, last year, the team made it to the semi-finals and suffered a painful exit against the Celtics.
